How much is it for an alignment? Would the Porsche dealership be the best bet? or are there any good private shops in the VA/MD/DC area? I'm about 15 minutes from Porsche of Arlington dealership.
Thanks,

Hold on guys. Do not let just any hack set your 944. You need a Hunter machine and someone who knows:
A) How to use it
B) How to do 944's
Best bet is either an ace at a P-car dealer (one that does other fanatics and has had good feedback), or a good independent that specializes in P-cars and 944's.
The machine is expensive, expect to pay $200 for this alignment.
The good news... 944's seem to hold their alignment very well and you do not have to do it often.
Stock alignment is actually pretty good overall and for occasional track duty. 'Course, a bit of extra negative camber for nuts like me is welcome (must be balanced with correct toe front and rear, hence an ace is the only one you let do this car).
In my opinion, this is the wrong place to go discount. This car is all about handling. Get what you paid for and enjoy one of the best handling cars made in that era.
Okay, I'm off the soapbox now. Just my 2 cents.

Don't let any tire shop align your 944. It takes special tools and knowledge. I got a $85 alignment at a local tire shop and it sucked. I got a $125 alignment at a local alignment shop that has a lot of Porsche experience and it rocks.
Call a local independent shop that specializes in Porsches and ask them who they use.

To second many of the comments made...we have the top-of-the-line SUN alignment system with 8 sensors. This is a very expensive piece of equipment. We don't align to degrees, even quarters of degrees but to tenths of degrees! We also have all the required specialty Porsche tools and experienced Porsche mechanics to do the work. Suffice to say at $250 to align your car (4-5 hour job) is a bargain.

Make sure that the tech is familiar with the 944 suspension. The HUNTER software incorrectly identifies the rear height eccentric as an adjuster for either toe or camber. Trust me, it is very difficult to tell the tech his job and get him to follow your advice on that one.
A typical 4-wheel alignment can take 2 hrs. or more, even if you are familiar with the car. Depending on labor rates, expect to pay between $140.00 and $200.00 for a good job.
(of course, we are at the $140 end...)

I just had mine done. I called a local small-scale porsche dealership (had about 5 used cars on the lot) & asked where they had theirs done (they source them out). They pointed me to this one shop (Craig's Autometrics if you're in the Rochester, NY area).
Anyways from the looks of the place they will do any car, but they specialize in VW/Audi/Porsche. Was very reassuring when there was 2 356's & 3 911's in the shop when I stopped by. Also in trying to get an estimate online (I had hit a guardrail, so mine was more than just a typical alignment) the guy basically described the 944 suspension to me over the phone & said what he thought was bent (he was right)...so I think he knows what he's talking about.
Anyways, other than the $100 charge to have them re-install the control arm (one of the bushings was destroyed, but the arm was 99% straight) it was $150 for a 4-wheel alignment.
They said that their standard rate for a 4 wheel is $80, but it's $150 for 944's.
Oh, and talk about a classy place. First mechanic I've ever been to that offered color computer printouts & pictures of everything they did. Plus the whole heated garage & valet service was impressive.
