I must chime in. I love Yngwie of course, Steve Vai is best when he just plays, and but he cant seem to stop f**king aroung (P & W is alomst unlistenable to me, I liked him in Alcatraz). Hey don't forget Eddie, the brown sound. I fondly rmeber the good old days of napster when you could find the most bizarre or hard to get examples of anybody you were interested in. I have a demo of "Yankee Rose" that is so cool, another of Yngwie just SHREDDING, warming up or something. The head cutting contest from "Crossroads" and my personal favorite, Ozzy Osbourne and Dweezil Zappa doing "Stayin Alive!"

If you like the neo-classical metal people like Yngwie and haven't heard Jason Becker, you really should. SRV is just an utter inspiration. Whoever mentioned Lou Reed and Sterling Morrison (Who also gets my vote for coolest name) hooray! As for the older blues guys, I think they go without saying, my personal favorite is Albert King.

I have a few to add to the non-shredder but awesome player list.
Fred Smith - MC5 seminal, period.
Lee Renaldo and Thurston Moore - Sonic Youth, ditto.
Bob Dylan - Listen closely, you'll hear it.
Andy Summers - The Police, he just blows me away.

I think I am going to take a stupid picture of my 944 with my guitar tomorrow, just for kicks.

Awesome topic, but somehow I feel I should have tried to stir up a contreversy.

I never really considered the guitar untill I came across Yngwie's "Trilogy" cd. I have always been very adept at learning and mastering many instruments (I love strings though). I havent touched a sheet of music since I was 11. Since then I have just played and played, straight out of my head. Now, its been about a month since I started Yngwie and a bit more than week ago, someone forgot a brand new guitar (****ty Peavy, but brand new none the less) at my restaurant (havent been able to find the owner! what a dummy). I figured I'd give it a go so I hooked it up to our P/A and tried to strum some stuff out. So far, I've gotten Yngwie's "Fire" down ok and I've thrown in some ok MegaDeth shiznit. Oh yeah, a buddy of mine is hooking me up with a black Squire Strat-wannabe and another is selling me a great amp. The buddy with the squire is gonna start jamming with me, and we're gonna form a weekend Neo-classical Metal group. Yeah! Next up: A white Flying V with gold hardware......

If you like Yngwie, you should check out Shawn Lane

If you like EJ, Buddy, or the blues in general, listen to Robben Ford.

If you like great Rock with great lead playing, listen to Tragically Hip

There is something about being into a chubby guy in high heels and leather who drives a Ferrari that just seems wrong.

OK you guy just pissed me off!!!

Talk about Alcatraz with Graham Bonnet (who sang on one Rainbow album before going to Alcatraz), talk about Yngwie and forger his album "Inspiration" is the name and then you forget who almost started it all.

Ritchie Blackmore!!!!

Wake up!

Now for my Blackmore story - sort of.

I was living in the Village (greenwich that is) in the early 80's. I went shopping at the local supermarket on 6th ave. Oh yeah I only went into the supermarket when I needed the necessities.

So there I am paying for my toilet paper when I hear the voice of the guy in back of me asking for Nyquil with an english accent. Im sure im listening to Roger Glover of Deep Purple/Rainbow fame.

I walk out wait for the guy to leave and ask him if hes RogerGlover. He says no, but people often mistake him for Roger. I say yeah you look like him, dress lke him and sound like him. we walk away.

Then he yells to me what if he was, what would I want. I said to shake the hand of the man that played and produced the music I listened to and worked with bands that covered.

he says ok, walks towards me, takes off his glove shakes my hand, and we walk together to the corner. I then thank him, tell him I hope he feels better turn around and start walking back to my apartment with my bag full of toilet paper in my hand. Boy was I cool.

Some day I'll tell you bout the time Miami Steve/Little Steven hugged and thanked me for a comment I made. I you're really nice I'll tell ya bout when I worked in the entertainment firm with some famous models/actresses.

No love for Randy Rhoads here? He just got caught short. Angus young for just pure down and dirty.. Yngwie just pure straight out speed with no F ups.. though I had heard of a tuning in the middle of a song here at a concert Locally and heard he is a *****. SRV is just a great player all the way around... No bad stuff there.. Eric johnson Is awesome!!!! Most people have no idea about him... No love of santana here either Why? My perhaps I am old. but all that are listed are great in each of there styles.. Nice.

Thumbs up

I saw SRV about one year before he was killed...he is totally awsome. His rendition of Hendrix Voodochile(sp?) is just awsome! BBKing and Satriani is great but Sat should NOT sing!!!

I also have not played guitar since end of college..too busy...but I have a bright red Jackson at home....

Good to see that good taste in cars seem to extend to music as well on this forum!!

So is nobody going to mention Eddie Van Halen? I know he may not blaze like Vai but he is right up there with one of the best R&R guitarists ever. Anyone ever heard of tapping as in hot for teacher?

Besides that I just wanted to second, third, fourth, or what ever we are at by now, for SRV being the greatest blues man to ever live. His life story and death are one of the most tragic I have ever heard. He finally gets himself off the coke and his life turned around and then his flippin' plane crashes. Life is unfair sometimes.

HA!! I almost forgot, my buddy was talking about this Hardcore metal guitar that he saw. It was a green transparent guitar in the shape of some sort of executioner's axe. That would be kinda cool to have onstage. Although I still think the ultimate metal guitar is a white flying V with gold hardware....

I have a Gibson Explorer knock-off that was white with a spider web patten in red radiating from the bridge - nobody could resist making 'devil hands' and headbanging just at the SIGHT of it... I got fired from an indie band just for bringing it to a rehearsal!! Rawk and Rawwllll man!

Thanks Dwight, I wondered when someone would remember Santana, but how 'bout Knopfler, Gilmour and Cray?

Little Wing did it for me, just something about that SRV/Hendrix thing.
