Post 951 or 968 purchase question.

ALL,

I am going to look at a '93 968 Tiptronic, Amazon Green with light gray leather today for a possible purchase. Could you guys give me some insight as to key things to check. Yesterday I drove 500 miles round trip to look at a low mileage '86 951 and can get it for the right price, however I want to see this 968 before I make my final decision.. The 951 very very clean and correct with 52,xxx miles.. Any insight from you guys is appreciated!

Is a tiptronic what you are looking for? How exactly do you plan on using the car?

I was not really looking for any thing particular, however the market for p-cars cars is good from a buyers stand point and I stumbled accross both cars by accident. My only purpose for the car is as a weekend driver. The asking price for the 968 (I have not seen yet) is $2500 more than the agreed price of the 951. The 951 is in exceptional condition with low miles so it is very attractive as an investment.. it seems car values are low right now and once they correct themselves I believe either of these cars could turn out to be a good investment.

Thoughts?

if you think these cars are investements you are just as wrong as you are right.

investment yes. profit making investment NO! when the economy gets better used cars will continue to go down as people go towards newer cars. you can probably buy a boxster for 20k.

describe the 951 a little better, salvage title, etc. and the experts on the board will be able to offer more help.

I knew investment was the wrong word to use. What I meant, is far as p-cars a good 'value' for the price.

'86 951

Red/ black interior(not full leather) 52,xxx miles
No mods, clean carfax that documents mileage, no wrecks. Only non stock item is stereo and entire car was repainted by Porsche dealership in Dallas due to being keyed. Has unused tool kit, compressor in case, window sticker etc.... VERY clean ride felt like it needs alignment and the hatch release cable busted, stone chipped fog lens. Only gigs I found. I can purchase for $9000

'93 968

Amazon green with gray leather, Tiptronic with 93xxx miles Turbo twist 17's. I have not seen the car yet so I do not have much more info on the car other than purchased new from Champion Porsche in Fla. traded in at Crecent City Porsche in New Orleans by local PCA member with 4 p-cars and the car has solid maintenance records. Asking price $11,500

Thanks for your help guys.

If you want an investment call Fred Siegel. If you want ***** out fun buy the turbo. BTW, I really want to see the widebody sometime. Will you be at NPR on July 26th/27th for PCA DE's?

Is the turbo a local car? I've only seen a few locals and the red one that I've seen has Tech. Twists.

BTW, about a year ago an Amazon Green 968 with grey leather came up for sale by a private owner in N.O. It was priced a little higher than your price but looked like it needed some help. Body panel fit wasn't very good and the interior was very faded. Hopefully this isn't the same car as Crescent usually has nicer examples.

I was at Crescent this past week and didn't see any FEWP's.

ELLSSUU,

Glad you joined the thread. The loss yesterday SUCKS!

The 951 is outside of Alexandria so not really 'local'. The 968 is Byrons from your neck of the woods, you may know him?

I will be there, probably with George 911-V8 but the RHINO will not be done, still working on the gear box conversion. Hit me with a PM and maybe we can hook up for lunch before then.

The tip 968's aren't real fast off the line, it's an early iteration tip and it takes the edge off the performance-but for a commuting or cruising car they are quite nice. A fairer comparison would be a 6 sp to 951, but it's really going to come down to if you're a boost junkie or want a more modern car-a mildly modded 951 will see off a 968 in absolute speed, but is much more of a handful to live with. People are divided on their feelings on this. And just about everyone would say a Turbo S 968 replica would be about the best of both worlds.

I really hope you and George will be there. I've been waiting to see the Swamp Monster, in person, for sometime now.

BTW, if you get the 951 from Alex. please bring me back a Leah's Pie.

Since you already have a 928, the 951 sounds like a better choice for some variety in your stable.

It sounds like you're already set on the 951 [look at your descriptions of each]. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> What purpose will this car serve? Daily driver since you've already got a hotrod...SURELY not just an investment because that's the wrong answer. There's getting a great deal on a car but never investment, especially if you're good at preventive maintenance.

I'm not sure how fast your current car is but here are a couple things to consider. The 968 tip will be dog slow. It will have very little torque compared to your 928. On the other hand, it would be a nice reliable daily driver. The 951 is a nice car but if you do ANYTHING to it [so much as software and more boost] you'll end up selling the 928 for more mods on the 951 because it's like crack.

On both cars, get history on belt changes, clutches [flex plate on tip TRUST ME], oil changes, watch that the coolant temperature remains cool, check that all the switches work [sunroof, climate control, AC] and that they feel 'supple,' check brake rotors [simple just run your finger over disc and feel for uneveness/scoring], make sure the cars idle well cold, no smoke out the tailpipe, no leaks [!!!], tires, paint condition, etc. Good luck.

I would go for the boost, there is nothing like it! the Tiptronic puts me off with the 968.

The 951 sounds very underpriced. Even in this market. Could be just an ignorant seller. Could be a problem unknown. I'd get it checked out just to be sure. At that price and those low miles I would be cautious amd tread lightly. If the car is as youve described it should be closer to $11-13K range -- even a stock red one which the majority are -- if its in exceptional condition at under 55K miles. Could be the Holy Grail, but I'd want it confirmed.

If you were looking for a daily driver as a sole car, Id opt for the 968. More refined, more reliable, newer, better options. As a weekend car, 951 probably a better bet. Id still want that car checked out tooth and nail though. Maybe the owner needs cash fast, but he's leaving some money on the table and I'd want to know why.

Good luck mate.

Thanks to all who replied, your input was considered with high regard. I will be scheduling the ppi with my local wrench for next week. And if all goes well, the 951 will be added to the 'stable'.. I hope it is the car it appears to be, because I think this is a great value on a low mileage car. I'll let you know how it turns out.
