I have one of the 38. About half were sold as kits, the other half were installed at Callaway. Not sure which mine was originally--I have exchanged messages with Reeves Callaway and they kept no VIN records.

About the only thing left on mine is the Callaway boost gauge--everything else is converted to Porsche turbo gear--much better. A quote from Reeves Callaway " An interesting concept, but like all prototypes, underdeveloped".

On a side note, a good friend of mine had a Callaway GTI from 1986. What a pain in the *** to tune right. We put a new cam in it and Callaway had timing marks painted all over the place. It was trial and error to get the cam to crank timing correct as it was quite different than the factory settings.
After a whole night of putting together then taking apart, we finally got it right. Boy was that thing fast. Would pull like hell in third and fourth gears. It was no dragster but a perfect highway machine.
I do agree with Reeves Callaways statement that it was unrefined, but they did sell the GTI's through VW dealers.

Someone restored one not too terribly long ago. Kept all the Calloway stuff. I cannot remember who that was right now...
Hell.. I am happy I remember how to type most days!

Guess I missed this thread. The car in MA for sale is mine. I'm not actively trying to sell the car right now but if someone offers me the right money I will sell it.
All the Callaway conversions were done at Callaway. This is because it involved tearing down the engine and machining the pistons to lower compression. Remember there was no such thing as a factory Turbo piston at this time. There were 2 groups of cars though. Customer cars which were brought to Callaway for conversion and cars bought new by Callaway and converted.
I find the car much more fun than the '86 turbo I previously had. The big benefit is the short distance between the turbo and the header (it is mounted directly on the manifold) and the faster spooling of the IHI turbo, no lag (you see boost at 1500rpm). Nice thing is the motronic system is retained therefore driveability is as good as stock. Unrefined, yep, fast and fun, you bet. If anyone has any questions, feel free to email me at holyoak@brandeis.edu.
