sounds sick....HUH.....WHAT <img src="graemlins/cussing.gif" border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" />

so far the mechanic has the motor still....since january.....i called him up and he said it will be finished in 2 weeks...sleeving it, putting it together, etc....hopefully before i go to play army for 2 weeks....

i bought my supercharger and have it sitting in the room now keeping me company...i still need to ship it to SFR so it can be modified....i didnt know they did this until i called them... i'll probably do this when i go play army so i have something to look foward to when i come back

no 944 makes space go crazy <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> <img src="graemlins/jumper.gif" border="0" alt="[jumper]" />

I've read, on this board, several times, that there is a way to get a working speedo in a 944/951 w/968 trans. Never seen it, nor d I know how it works, but I BELIEVE Tabor has mentioned it and/or knows something about it...

G96-

do you have any idea about the weight of the 968 trans and/or how it compares to the 951's weight?

Coleco-

Where did you find the specs for those two VW engines, and have you seen the specs of other cars engines like that? The W12 is a good bit heavier. I'd like to know how much the VR6's weighed...

Well if I can get the speedo working with a 968 I think we found a winner. I think I'll look for a used one for a good price and then have powerhaus II rebuild it to handle the tq I'm going to be throwing at it each and every stop light.

541 lbs for a 12 cyl. is not bad. I don't know off hand how much the viper V10 weights but I'm sure it's much heavier. The thing I really like about the W12 is the dimensions. You could stuff that thing in just about any car.

I got the specs off of vwvortex if I recall.

I would also like to know what the 968 box weights compared to the 944, 951, and S2. The LT1 engine will weight a little more than a 951 engine so I hope the 968 actually weights more than the 951. This will help with the 50/50 weight of the car. I may also have to re-locate the battery but not much more to get the 50/50 weight. The overall weight of the car will be hopefully in the low 2000's with all the FG panels, light wheels and AC, sunroof, powerseat, etc. removed. Will keep the heat though, it get cold up here.

The driveshaft is also carbon fiber with splined ends grafted on. It's about 1" in diameter and stiff enough that no bearings are needed. Derrek says you can order them in any combination of trans mount and engine bell housing configuration.

if you are going to go through all this work i wouldn't worry too much about the stock spedo... just get a nice slick programmable autometer one (a couple hundred) and an inductive proximity sensor ($80 or so) and fab up a little mount to sense the rotating thing of your choice. for superior accuracy that spedo will also take a sinusoidal signal from a gear under a hall sensor if you wanna go that route.

Several things:

Coleco: W16 sounds cool- I don't know if it will fit in the engine bay- maybe you can find a way to rear mount it, or go for a mid engine 951 16cyl <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

There was a thread recently- I think I started it actually- about the weight of 951 engine vs 968 engine, etc. I had always been told the 968's was lighter b/c the turbo stuff adds weight, and, since the intercooler's way out front, it hurts weight dist. Based on replies, it looks like the 968's ~40lbs(?) lighter- the 951 was like 405lbs or so. I did pick up several different heads when my 951 head was off ahile back, and surprisingly enough, it was definately the lightest- not sure what the others were, but they were about the same size- one was a BMW and the other an Audi or VW. I have been told that the 968 trans is heavier than the 951S trans. I doubt it's by too much- maybe ~20lbs(?). This (and lighter engine weight) accounts for the excellent weight distrubution of the 968 (49/51 vs 951 is 51/49)...

What are you going to do about the gears if you get a 968 trans? Powerhaus II says they can be changed for ~$300/ea, so you'll need to budget at least an extra $900- I'd go for the whole $1500 if I were you- 1st isn't worth doing, as it's way too difficult, from what I was told, and MUCH more expensive...

If you're going w/the 968 Turbo trans, then I don't know the first thing about them, except that $5500 sounds pretty good for brand new. Does ANYONE know the gearing for the 968 Turbo's? I'd love to know how it was spaced- I'd be REALLY surprised if they screwed it up like the street 968...

Oh, Coleco: Thanks for the VW engine info...

Wow I can't believe I'm getting this much help I thought as soon as I mentioned V8 I'd get my head chopped off.

$5500 for a new turbo trany is not bad as long as the gearing is good, thanks Tom. If the gearing is not to favorable I may be better off going with a used 968 gearbox. Then throw $1500 at powerhaus II to make me up some custom gears as Robby pointed out.

Anyone ever hear of houseman(?), he makes custom gears for a lot of the club SCCA guys.

Yes sPaCeCoWbOy I have heard of level 10. They also build up automatic gearboxes to handle crazy amounts of tq for drag cars. Never delt with them so have no idea how good they are.

bs good idea on the aftermarket speedo.

Tom H thanks for the classifieds listing.

Luke thanks for giving me your experience. Has anyone else ever delt with greg. Tom do you know greg or did you just spot the listing?

The trany will be the last stage I do. I would like to do the suspension and brakes first. Then the engine, cooling, clutch. I will be able to drive around at this point, not at WOT, but at least low-mid RPM drives to get all the bugs out of the new engine. Plus the engine will be in the break in period for a while so the tq tube and NA trany should be able to handle it until I'm ready to get a new trany(read save up enough money).
