Muffler options - What is recommended?
Since I have gotten into my exhaust(gutting the car) I am now thinking of putting a new muffler on. I want the car LOUD but not ricey. Any recommendations?

Michael,
Seems a lot of folks like Bursch. I've got a 2.5" stainless system from GHL. It's LOUD. However, I've got it hooked up to a complete 2.5" exhaust with free-flo cat, which definitely adds to the noise factor. It's a bit too loud for me personally, I'm going to try adding a pre-muffler from Huntley and see what happens.
Good luck!

I was gonna go with the bursch and then decided to get a custom solution. I used a hooker aero-chamber muffler connected to a monza tip with mini resonators. The sound is not ricey at all. It is only a bit noisy around town, but it gets loud enough when you step on it. The aero chamber muffler is basically straight through(you can see right through the muffler) with an "aero chamber" to muffle the sound. IMO, it gives a great balance between low restriction and decent sound.

if you want LOUD just run straight headers. haha. I know this is very loud because on my way home i took a turn, then i hear this loud VROOOOM. i pulled over and saw that the weld on the front of the car broke. so the cat and muffler are just hanging there and i am running sraight MSDS headers. 944's sound mean with just sraight headers. but i have to say i had fun driving my car this way, i got a lot of looks, luckly no cops heard me. so instead of homework i will be welding my exhoust back up.

Still liking my Bursch header very much. The exhaust I would have only changed one thing. I went with a custom 2.5" into a "pre-muffler" in the place of the cat... this is a Dynomax UltraFlo Bullet, then goes into a Dynomax UltraFlo Oval in the stock location. While this saved a bit on weight over stock, there's a better solution methinks. Having many 944's around here prepped for race we've had a chance to really compare sound_and_quality. Anywho, skip the pre-muffler and use a Borla Oval from their race series. Same basic design as my Dynomax, flows equally well, but sounds a bit better and saves a bit of weight... and it's stainless. All of these mufflers are on the loud side and meant for racing duty... they use perforated tubing with a fiberglass or stainless steel roving mesh. CFM is higher than any chambered muffler, including the famed Flowmaster Delta mufflers. The Hooker Aero Chamber and the Edelbrock S designs are similar, but do_not flow as good. BTW, the Flowmaster Delta-40 is very loud as the only muffler on a 944na, and doesn't flow nearly as good. The semi-myth that the 944na requires excessive (near-stock) backpressure is just not holding much ground lately. I'm making more TQ than I thought possible (from the mods list), and a little less HP than I expected... no matter though... the car simply hauls_ass compared to stock! You can take that to the payday loans shop.

I've got a nice mix...
MSDS ceramic coated headers
2.5" all the way back
Removable high flow cat and test pipe
Flowmaster 40 series "muffler"
Yeah, its loud, but somewhat refined as compared to my glasspack of days past.
I kind of wanted a "little" backpressure, but some serious flow when I wanted it to, and I think I got it!
I feel mostly the same low end touque as before, maybe a little improved, but definitely a high end whail and more fun up there!
Some say Stainless, but mine is all that welsable mild steel... saves mondy and longevity isn't all that important (5 yrs is plenty long for me at a min)
I've wanted to post a video/sound clip, but my camera has left on another vacation!
Any questions, lemme know!

I had 2 crummy mufflers on my 88. When I finally found a good mechanic, he installed an OEM cat-back muffler from a '92 S2. Best move I have done! Smooth, QUIET, yet sounds the way a Porsche was meant to sound (love that wine)!
Of course I wasnt looking for more power or a louder sound...but I figure the engineers at Porsche knew what they wanted for the car, so who am I to argue!
Happy now!

Dynomax Super Turbo, louder but not ricey. Similar design to the Bursch but a fraction of the price.

My first reaction about the OEM muffler on my S2 was that it was too quiet... but the more I drive the car, especially with the windows down and roof off, I can hear a very nice tone coming from the exhaust.
I agree with you... I'm beginning to believe that the Porsche engineers knew what they were doing, and did a very nice job when they did it!!
P.S. Are you sure it was a 1992? I thought that the S2 ended in 1991, and the 968 started in 1992?

You may also want to try a MagnaFlow. I recently put one on my 1992 Audi 100S, and it is very nice.
It is a straight-through design, and it is not too loud. It is a nice deep, muted tone... enough for you and others to notice that it is "different".
On the highway, it is not boomy or loud. In fact, it is actually rather quiet at cruising speeds, until you mash the gas!!
Of course, I can't say how it will sound on a 944. My Audi has two cats and a resonator, so that certainly affects the sound output!! It may be just what you are looking for on your 944.
OH, FWIW, I've been told that the MagnaFlow folks designed their mufflers similar to Borla mufflers. Supposedly, Borla's patent ran out... and/or they didn't do their patent homework correctly (I can't remember which), and MagnaFlow was able to replicate the design without legal hassle, at a lower price. I don't know if all that's true... but as the saying goes... "that's what someone told me"!!
