Default PS and Alt Strut Questions

Has anyone had any issues with the power steering and or alternator adjustment struts breaking at the threaded ends? I've broken both the PS (twice) and alternator (once) during track days. The car is a 944S. The obvious items like proper belt tension, belt alignment etc. have been addressed and ruled out. Thanks.

I've broken the bolt but never the strut itself.

I broke a couple of them last year, one right after the other.

Turns out they weren't evenly lined up(they ends didn't sit flush with each other).

Threw on some washers to shim one end and haven't had a problem since.

The alternator adjuster strut uses a sleeved-shim on the hard mount side away from the air compressor. Shim fits thru the strut and also incorporates about a 1/4 inch lip. It's why the bolts are 2 difference sizes. Without the sleeve-shim the adjuster will not be flush on either side.

Also, always use 2 open end wrenches (17mm??) to back off and tighten the keeper nuts. Torquing on them without opposite pressure on the adjuster barrel will cause you to snap the loop end off the adjuster.....done it twice.

I had that happen to the powersteering on my 944 track car back 7 years ago. I solved it by removing the powersteering.

For the alternator I make sure things are lined up and once the belt is tight I crank the pivot bolt on the alterntor(or AC if you still have it) tight. The helps take off the load on the adjuster. Never had the alternator adjuster fail.

Yup, it happened to me 200 miles from home, and this is what I did to get home. Thank God there was a Kragen nearby.

The tensioner snapped clean right at the base of one of the threaded eye-bolts. I TIG welded it back together and it's been holding for a few thousand miles. After welding it, it was glowing white, and I just let it cool off as slowly as possible so it would not get brittle.

Found the source of my problem...Pete at RS Barn suggested I look at the balance shaft timing. One of the gears was place 180 degrees out (there are two keyway slots). Smooth as silk now.
