I know I diverge, but look what you get when you buy the DVD version of the movie:

Robby,

Supras do not handle better than 951's. Supras are more like 928's than they are like 951's. If you want the best handling Toyota buy an MR2. The Supras are heavy heavy cars, 3600 lbs or so.

Ok as to the driving, the supra doing the crazy drift has one hell of a hp advantage over our P-cars and that helps with the drift, the driver is crazy that also helps. But as for technicals behind it, well I would think it was an LSD or a Locking Diff, using a standard diff he would only be smoking one wheel not both.

Sliding into the parking spots, well I think that is some skill and a lot of car set up. But I would only be guessing.

Talking

I found this post in another forum a long time ago but I think it fit's nicely here...

Rice Rice Baby!!!!
Yo, VTEC, lets kick it,

Rice Rice Baby, Rice Rice Baby...
Alright stop - collaborate and listen,
Rice is back with a brand new invention.
Chopped springs, they hug tha road tightly,
6 inch exhaust tip flows really loud nightly.
Will it ever stop, yo, I don't know,
hit my neon lights, and I'll glow.

To tha extreme my car looks like a candle,
and tha paint job - it was done by a vandal.
Dance, I got a speaker that booms,
this aint a car, it's a mobile sound room.
Deadly, listen to tha dope melody,
if it was louder yo, it'd be a felony.
Love it or leave it you can't gain way,
with my Type-R sticker I'll lose you any day.

If there was a problem yo I'll solve it,
check out my rims while my front drive revolves it,
Rice Rice Baby, Rice Rice Baby...

Now that my suspension is jumpin',
my bumber hits tha ground, but who cares I'm a thumpin.
Quick to tha point, to tha point no fakin',
cookin' mopeds like a pound of bacon.
Burning 'em, cause I'm quick and nimble,
you can't fade me and my VTEC symbol.
In your souped up E-clipse or G-T-O...
I'm on a roll, I always ride solo.
Rollin', in my 2 point 0,
it runs low 18's, yo, that really ain't slow.
Tha girlies on stand by,
don't even want to say "Hi".
Did ya stop? No, I just flew by.
Kept on, pursuing to tha next block,
I bust a left and I'm headin' to tha next stop.
The block was dead, yo, so I continued to A-1-A, Westheimer Avenue!

Tha girls looked hot wearing less than bikinis,
I saw a few chumps drivin' stock Lamborghini's.
Jealous, cause I'm out drivin' mine,
ready to race 'cuz my Nittos lookin' fine.

If there was a problem, yo I'll solve it,
check out my rims while my front drive revolves it,
Rice Rice Baby, Rice Rice Baby...

Take heed, 'cause I'm a Honda poet,
Akimoto's on tha scene just in case ya didn't know it.
My exhaust tip, created all tha bass sound,
rumbles enough to put holes in tha ground.
'Cause my ride's style is so reeeeeeeeeeeeal,
with an exhaust tone that ya can feeeeeeeel.
4 foot spoiler, it's a helluva concept, my ride is hype, and you wanna
step
WITH THIS.
In my rearview you'll fade,
slice like a Ginsu,
sounds like a Kitchen- Aid.
So fast, that all tha VR-4's say "DAMN!",
if rice was a drug I'd sell it by tha gram.
Keep my composure when the front tire breaks loose,
magnetized by the kick of 30 horse juice.
If there was a problem, yo I'll solve it,
check out my rims while my front drive revolves it,
Rice Rice Baby, Rice Rice Baby...

Yo, we outta here...

Word to yo *****....

At least I think it's funny.

Hmmm, handling is a subjective term that really should be broken up further. Yeah a 951 is more responsive to intial inputs, but at the limit, the SupraTT is more forgiving. In objective cornering specs, the SupraTT wins hands down. Similar slalom times, but the skipad at 0.95-0.98g beats the 951's 0.86-0.91g rating.

Supras before the MK-IV '93+ generation developed the bad rap that was never redeemed. The MK-II '82-86 generation weighed the least at 3000lbs, but was underpowered. The middle generation MK-III '87-92 is what developed that GT-car/928 portly image weighing a hefty 3625lbs. A lot of weight savings went into the latest generation SupraTT '93+ and it showed up at a more svelt 3425lbs. That's like a 951 with a heavy passenger.

All the SupraTTs I've encountered at the tracks usually run about 5-secs faster than me and passengers are usually worth 3-5 seconds. The SupraTT certainly isn't a 928, since I can beat them at the tracks easily:

http://www.virgeweb.com/danno/Porsche951vs928s4.avi

But I can't catch a SupraTT... maybe after I install my SDS and get another 100hp... heh, heh...

That 750hp supra used k26's. I wonder what variant. I understand there are like 12 types of k26's?

Danno,

Well handling is def subjective, and those skidpad numbers are also not quite fair. Tire technology has a lot to do with skidpad numbers going up.

Both cars are very neutral, I guess I prefer lighter cars, just a preference. I don't like my dads new M3 despite the great numbers it puts up. To me feel means a lot. Your right the 928 comparison was not really fair, but maybe a 928 with a supercharger and coilovers? Regardless.

Supras are great cars, don't get me wrong, I would love to have one in the garage, but it wouldn't be my track car.

Interesting, eh? Here's a photo of the twin K26 turbos in action:

Can't quite make out the numbers on the ID plaque. But that means a K26 on our cars should be good for 750/2 = 375hp!!!

I like this one line from the article: [quote]"There's one [corner] where I had to pitch the car sideways at 120mph before the crest, so it was pointing in the right direction of the corner when it landed."

Sounds like fun, and I still can't believe the thing hit 240mph on the straight. I gotta go drive the Nurburgring one of these days!

Yeah, I like light cars too. That's why I'm stripping everything out of my 951 (anyone want a complete air-con system?). Anyway, I'm anticipating tough competition in the OTC from the '01 M3 that's entered. Also the V8-powered Miata sounds menacing...

Aren't the SC300 engines the same ones used in the NA Supras?

Ian-

Supras DO handle better than 951's (based on most people's definition of handling)- and I'm referring to Turbo S- the regular 951 doesn't even come close- and remember, I AM talking about bone stock in BOTH cases. I've seen the test b/t the 968, RX-7TT, 968CS, 300ZXTT, 3000GTVR4, & Corvette. The Supra ran Willow Springs at 1:38, 968 CS- 1:43.3, normal 951- over 1:45, Turbo S- 1:41, by comparison, '89 911Turbo- 1:43. Anyway, YES, tires can make a difference, and I DON'T KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT THE ORIGINAL TURBO S TIRES, although I'm sure they were decent for their day: Goodyear Eagle. The Supra had Brigestone Potenza RE 020- Supra test from March '93 R&T. Danno- it shows the weight at 3600lbs- that's ~450lbs over our cars, or only ~350 if you believe the 3250-3295lb weight listed in several of the older tests for our beloved Turbo S. I know you've weighed your's (Danno) and have said 3050 or so(?) but also know you've done a little w/it- mine weighed ~3155. Also, as for the Supra and the tire issue- Danno has run sub 1:37's (wasn't that right, or maybe a little faster?) around Willow Springs, and just said the Supras beat him by ~3secs- I can only assume that both cars were pretty much maxed out (driver-wise) and had better than stock tires(?). Danno- what have you done performance-wise? Have you just done chips? Do the Supras that are beating you run ANY mods?

I DO agree, however, on lighter cars- that's the only thing I have against the Supra- it's weight. Also the Audi S4- I hate it's heavy-*** weight, and weight distribution (it's like a FWD). Unfortunately, cars are just getting heavier- I even think our cars are a little heavy- for their performance and overall design, chassis, wheels, brakes, susp, engine, etc, I just feel they should be ~200lbs lighter. The RX-7TT's weight is pretty nice- the rotary engine, nice balance, Torsen, RWD, etc- ~2900lbs...

Ian- I'm sure the Supra drifting the track in that short clip had LSD, but I always assumed that a car w/LSD would be harder to oversteer (controlled or not) than the same car w/out LSD- am I wrong? Has anyone here ever driven, or seen someone driving, a 951 like that? I mean being able to drift it like that for so long and so controllably? That seems like it would be pretty damn hard to me...

Actually, it's the SR20DET. I have the AWD version in my 91 G20 (bolts right up to the FWD cars).

I won't argue with you about Stupid Street and Turbo, but I most certainly will argue with that statement about Sport Compact Car. Those guys are most certainly not ricers. I know the technical editor (Dave Coleman) and the Features Editor (Jared Holstien) and Contributing Editor Mike Kojima is a close friend of mine.

These guys are hard core and hate rice. Dave Coleman doesn't like anything that doesn't make a car go faster. He runs (and has won - class win) pro rallies, and he's a damned good automotive engineer.

Mike Kojima is responsible for a lot of high powered turbo cars that are daily drivers. Hell, I'd put his 300ZX up against any 951 that is registered for the street (it makes 600hp and is properly developed - well rounded). He's about to write a book on turbos. When it comes out, buy it. I assure you it will be the best book on turbochargers you'll find. Mike is an automotive engineer for an OEM. He is a consultant to the aftermarket performance parts industry. He's a racer. And he also worked in the Toyota IMSA GTP program.

I've sent several folks to Mike's article on choosing/sizing a turbo that was printed late last year in SCC. You won't find better information on this subject anywhere.

So, careful on the generalizations. Yes, they do occasionally cover some ricey stuff because they do have some following that demands some of that (but they don't do a lot). But, they probably publish the best technical info of any monthly automotive magazine that is not a racing magazine (such as Race Car Engineering).

Actually if you watch the extra bonus materials of the movie the director was the pizza boy that complained about the street racers.
