if it's like mercedes, it's tied to the vin and a dealer should have the code if it's the original radio, if not pull it out and becker can give the code off the serial number.

i think i hit the down button a bunch of times trying to see if that was the button to push.

Dumb question:
How are you supposed to enter the code to unlock the radio?
I've got an old Reno out of a parts car, along with the "Car Radio Passport", except nobody bothered to write the code in the pamphlet.
So I went to one of those "Download" sites and found a code generator, but how do I enter the code to check it? On my BMW you press the preset buttons, but this "generator" produced a code with an 8 in it, and there's only 6 preset buttons.
Or Tom could you PM me your radio's serial number, and I'll send back the code, you can tell me if it matches. (Starts with BP, it's on the side of the radio, or the passport.

Try: http://www.bluespot.co.uk/stock/decode.asp (you'll have to find one listed form a CM147).
There are also several forums where you can post your SN and they'll respond with a code, but it may take them a few days.
I just went through a new radio ordeal. EVERY new aftermarket radio I found, including premium priced ones were ALL made in China. All of them had too many tiny buttons and submenu after submenu just to get to any useful functions. All of them looked gaudy and none of them looked like they belonged in the Porsche. I finally decided on a Becker TrafficPro and was able to source a new one.
If you're interested, I have a Becker CDR-220. However, the display is unreadable in a 944/951. There is a replacement display available from Becker, but it's $100 (plus $100 core), so it probably wouldn't be cost effective for you unless you're after this specific radio.
And whichever radio you end up getting, take the time to solder/heat shrink a proper wiring harness. If you're not handy with a soldering iron, enlist the help of one of your geek buddies. I can't tell you how many times I've had to go digging through a half-assed install trying to fix a intermittent connection/short because whoever did the work was too lazy to do it right. Digging through a dozen+ butt connectors/crimp caps sucks.

I have the code. That's what pisses me off.
turns out you enter the code through the push buttons. there are six buttons and the code has an 8 in it. i think you just push button one say five times and get a 5, the push button two etc.
when done you are supposed to hit the down tuning button. well i hit the down tuning button a few times. then i re read the instructions and it said if you try 16 times the radio locks you out.
no i think i am locked out and it will probably cost more to get blaupunct to unlock it than to get a new unit.
What hurts the most is that i sold the radio from my first 89 to a lister, turns out it was missing the piece he needed... it all worked out, but he was not happy because of the aggrivation etc.

screw the code. I will just sell the radio and pay off the car with the proceeds. http://www.oldautoradio.com/NWindexD...ORSCHE&year=80
anyone want to give me $300 for my radio? JK.
Someone has to know the trick to reset the radio so it will accept a code.

Hey Tom, Ill see what Porsche says to reset the code, now remember if the radio was ever replaced the code you have will be incorrect, thats why having the serial number off the radio would help. What model radio is it? I am now at work so ill start digging...
