Post Oh for crying out LOUD (924 GTR nose panel for 951)

I went ahead an ordered the nosepiece for a 924 GTR, the one with vents, for my 951 from PartsHeaven. 75.00 plus shipping. I had some foolish idea that it would bolt on with only minor mods.

What came in the mail was -more- than I bargained for. They sent me a rather large percentage of the whole front clip! I'm only exaggerating a little. I have a whole superstructure as well as the latch, etc., and the nose panel isn't screwed on, it's spot welded on, and so on. It's in pretty nice shape so I got what I asked for, for a good price. It's just going to be more work. Lots more work.

Any easy way to break spot welds?

What's the best way to cut metal off of metal without damaging part? Sawzall? Dremel? Suggestions?

tia

You could drill out the spot welds if there is enough access, or spend a weekend with the dremel.

Thanks guys. I will go slow and careful and PATIENT.

Should be pretty nice when done. This is the fun stuff, after all: not like replacing power steeering hoses and such.

I think I will take photos of the whole process and put up a how-to on my web site. Stay tuned.

cheers

i have had good luck taking off welds with a pnumatic rotary cut off tool. i imagine an electric one would work almost as well. i am speaking of the kind of tool that uses an abrasive "blade" which as i understand, heats up the metal and oxidizes it away.... essentially burning its way through. it does not work on aluminum.

Thad, how is the GTR nosepiece different than that of a 924 turbo?

What I'm getting at is - the nosepiece from the 924 turbo is too short to go right on the 951...
-you knew that, right?

Oh, and BTW, Eastwood sells drill bit/cutters made specifically for removing spot welds (what I'm using on my hood project).

Re: spot weld cutting

Get a spot weld cutter, they look like this

I prefer this style though, as you can replace the pilot drill

The eastwood Co. sells them or you should be able to find them at a local body shop supply house.

Good luck with the nose Thad', gotta get some pic's up when it's done

Keith:

I knew that, yup. I will deal with it.

Thanks everybody for the special tools info, it will make things go smoother.

Point of clarification: it's a nosepiece from a 924 turbo, not a GTR, which I gather are considerably rarer...
