No such thing as a cheap porsche. My 951 cost 8k with 15k in 4 years of maintenance. I then spent another 8 on it over two years. It is currently in the body shop after a accident but I do not want a crappy patch job or cheap respray, its going to set me back about 10. Yikes I don't even want to think about totals and you know what, my car is due for a clutch.
You were definitely on the wrong end of maintenance cost Keith. I've owned my 951 for over 5 years and the only breakdown maintenance to date has been a starter, vacuum lines, BOV, shift lever, new rotors/pads, and one door handle so probably less thjan $1K. Anything else I've spent has been voluntary upgrades. The 951 is a great car and dependable if you get a solid one to begin with and drive it right; buying a poorly maintained one or over modding can be a one way ticket to Hell. Just my perspective.

how many kms in the 5 years? I'm guessing not a daily driver.

in the past 2 year 2 things have broken on my 944 that stopped me from driving it. the rest I put into it has been preventative maintenance like belts/ hoses, water pump, and routine stuff like brakes/ tirest etc.

last year by oil cooler started gushing oil and the oil pan gasket was shot also and I had to do that msyelf and the car was down for a while and now the clutch.

but I still can't complain about the car because it's freakin 23 years old, it's my own fault for making a 23 year old foreign car my daily driver.

everytime I spend so much money to fix my 944 I think about just selling it for whatever I can get for it and buying a newer car but I've spend so much time and money on it I can't justify selling it for what I'd get for it which is probably less than what I put into it.

Clutch in a 996 and boxster is just as expensive to replace.

yeah but at least the repair on the car won't be half the car's value lol.

but i've read that early boxsters had engine problems (engines suddenly grenading for no reason). I see a lot of boxsters for sale that state "new engine" and the car only has like 60k miles.

I heard if you buy a higher milliage boxster over 100k miles then the engine is likely good and won't grenade.

Not a daily driver so probably about 5K miles year. Those miles are generally hard fast miles though in the mountains or on road trips. I don't baby the car by any means...I just got a good one I guess. My 83 was incredibly dependable after replacing the original clutch at 160K miles. My son and I put over 20K miles/year and replaced shocks, front wheel bearings, and 2 door handles.

[QUOTE=Yummybud924;5819309]

now after paying 2 grand I can never sell the damn car as I'd lose too much money I've put into it.

Only 2 grand? Sorry to have to mention it, but an old Porsche isn't the best choice if you're looking for a cheap low maintenance car. If you seriously can't afford it, get out now.

I wouold make sure that you get new needle bearing for the clutch fork. A new clutch fork pin. Clutch fork is repaired. (wears down on the ends horribly) New Pilot bearings. And of course Throw out bearing replaced. Without those. it's just another set of weak spots dying to break the new stuff.

While you're in there sort of thing. I would have upgraded pressure plate and disc. Not much difference in price than the full assembly with the stock rubber pile of... .

I guess they only replaced the pressure plate when they did your "Clutch job" I would want to be there, your pressure plate could still be good. Thats like 500 bucks back in your pocket right there.

I would want to be there also in case it's not the clutch that failed. A sheared coupling at the TA can also make all sorts of noise and the car will not move when in gear. Does the drive line turn when the engine is running?

Yes I don't quite get clutch from these symptoms. R&P, splines, coupler... I dunno. I did not see where rubber chunks were found, but I guess it could be a wrecked spring-center disc or something.

8.5 hrs are quite reasonable, especially from Weissach as they specialize in high-end cars.
