Default Would running 15 inch phonies be better than running 16 dish?

My Dad and I are making a run to Almanor this week, and since there are lot's of twisties, were gonna take my car. Last time I did it, I had my 16 inch flat dish 928 rims on running 225 up front, and 255 at rear. Would I be better off running my phonies which are 225 front and rear?

despite the message that my username implies...
i'd vote for more traction from the rear for twisty road driving.
Especially if those are what you are used to driving on normally.

coming from a person who had the 928 dish wheels and now has phone dials...go with the 928 dish wheels...so much better traction. more rubber contact with the ground better your traction, simple racing logic there.

Yea, I had a felling that the wider rear tire was gonna help. The 16 inch rims just scare me sometimes because they feel like there to big for my car. I can't explain it, but it's like my car feels more comfortable having the phonies on. Wierd? Lol.

I disagree with the 16's, you are just adding understeer with that big a tire in the rear. There is a reason you feel more comfortable with the phones, it's a neutral set up and it's lighter. 924S does not have the horsepower to require a 255 in the rear. The 15" set up is also a little shorter making the car feel a little quicker (gearing) The widest I run on the track is 225 on all fours and the car is extremely neutral.

I drive the Sierras a lot and run 275/255-40 17's and they have so much more grip, especially on fast sweepers, than the OE 16's for a 951. Go big, go fast I say. For an NA though I bet the PD's would feel more responsive and tossable. Turn in is quicker with the smaller tires and Hwy. 32 is a great cruise!

I've tried 16's and 17's, and I'm currently running 15X7 phones. Overall, the 15's just have better feedback to me, especially with the manual steering. The 16's, and especially the 17's, were heavy feeling and a bit numb IMO. Now, if you were driving a 951, or something with more horsepower than a minivan, I'd say go with the big rubber.

My exact experience.
And now to slightly jack your thread.. any chance you have weighed your car lately Dan? we seem to have similar cars, and I just came in at 2505lb. with roll bar...

and back on subject, remember tire age/condition/quality has a lot to do with what will work best.

Also depends a lot on the tread pattern / wear of the sets. (Edit: ^ as mentioned above)

I run 265/15 on the rear (and 245/15 fronts) for street driving and they grip very well in dry conditions. I have a spare set of 215/15 on all 4 that I occasionally use and they tend to understeer or oversteer far more frequently, but they are general economy based tires.

don't forget some minivans have more power than a stock 951.

tire type too. i had falkens on my 16's, then when i got new tires i got toyo proxes, big differnce in dry traction. the 15's offer better feedback, but i think the wider 16's offer better grip.

i'm thinking if you're just cruising(not knowing the road) it really won't make a differnce. usually the speed limit on roads don't test the traction or balance of my 944, same is likely for your 924

I know the road, but i'm not gonna push my car to the limit, just enough to were it get's me all excitied. lol. I'm thinking i'm gonna stick with the 16's. The thread on both sets of rims are great. The dish's tire tread is brand new, and the 15's are at about 80%.

So many factors to consider. Are you running the same brand/type tire on each rim? Usually smaller tires will give you quicker acceleration out of the corners, but grip of the bigger tires may allow you to have higher speeds in corners. There are trade-offs no matter which package you use.
WTS, it comes down to the actual tires that are on the rims. If the phones have better tires, they may actually grip better than the bigger ones.
Age, type, rating of tires would be the factor I would consider.

The actual tires that are on the rim will make more of a difference than the rim they're mounted on. That said, these cars like the same size tires at all 4 corners (unless you're over ~300rwhp).

I've never weighed my car, but I'd be thrilled to see something around 2500lb. Did you strip the interior (carpet, insulation, etc.) to get that low? Also, are those Fuchs on your car? If so, what kind of widths and offsets did you use, and did you have to roll the fenders or anything to get them under there? I'd love to put Fuchs on my 924S, but I didn't think they'd fit.

Again, sorry for the hijack.
