what kind of work does it take to get piston squirters? are you going for a dry-sump?

Well, the engine building continues on. The engine is entirely back together and the next step it to put it into the car again.

I have to say up front that this is a lot more involved than I ever expected, and a lot more knowledge and experience is required than I ever thought. It sure is a great thing that I can work with a 30+ year automotive technician like Mike R. who always seems to know the question before I ask it, and answer before I need it, and the next step before I'm even thinking about it. That pretty much leaves me for the running around the shop scrambling up the odd bolt or grease that's needed at the moment.

Everything is together with the exception of one thing. The bracket below. Can any of the other S2 owners identify this bracket and where it goes on the engine. It's made of sheet metal, and I seem to recall that it goes someplace down by the oil pan, I can't for the life of me remember where. Any hints? (A free virtual beer for the first correct identification!)

Thanks in advance!

Does not look familiar to me, but I have not stripped my engine down. You think it goes down by the oil pan? What dia are those holes? Could it be the bracket for a heat shield to attach?

IIRC the holes are M8's or M6's. I think some sort of wiring thing might be connected to it, or as a heat sheild, but if it's down by the oil pan, far enough away from the headers, then it'd have to be physical protection from road debris, wouldn't it?

There is a heat shield for the passenger side motor mount, which is right below the headers and near the oil pan. I just can't remember if the heat shield mounts to the block or to the the cross member.

Ah, that piece looks familiar! Too bad it's not more than familiar.

The pass motor mount heat shield is bigger and has slats in it - this isn't it.

Lemme take a peek at PET and see if I can ID it... definitely looks like it belongs around the pan...

Arrgh, no luck... maybe part of the heat shielding near the oil cooler adapter then?

Vaughan,
Yea, I paged though all the engine drawing in PET and didn't see it either. That was my first stop.

I agree with you in that it's not the motor mout heat sheild. That is very light weight sheet metal, and this is a little more substancial in material. I know it's around the engine by the oil pan, and the pass side sounds right too. But I put it up against all the different bolts / holes there, and couldn't seem to find a match.

I think the shop has a 944 (not S2) on a hoist, so I'll take a look under that one and see if it has a matching one.

Hope these photos are self-explanatory. It goes at the top, just below the #2 and #3 intake.

Hope this helps,

Joe

Sit Rep.

The engine is in the car, all the accessories have been hooked up, and it's running now. There are a number of clean up items which include:
  • Body shop work
  • Front and rear alignment
  • Wire tie injector wiring to fuel rail
  • Heat Protect wiring behind timing cover and under intake manifold
  • AC Compressor leaking, rebuilt kit or replace? Need PAG oil 6 Oz.
  • Weld up catalytic converter heat shield
  • Diagnose Oil Level sender (Need to double check, seems to work OK)
  • Running lights and right side blinker lights
  • Reinstall belly pan front and middle
  • (Done) Drive train vibration (nothing to be done?)
  • (Done) Hood shocks
  • (Done) Boots on oil pressure sender
  • (Done) New Power Steering line
  • (Done) Collect left over parts and put in trunk
When I did drive it around the block a few times, the engine pulled very strongly, and the torque band above 4K RPM was way stronger than before. Can't wait to resolve the remaining issues and get this beast back where it belongs: The Track!

Last update on Erik's behalf, since he was busy wrenching late last night. We tackled the 4k rpm vibration. Sure enough, as we'd all expect, the balance shafts weren't timed right. Marks lined up, but the lower shaft pulley was incorrectly installed to the shaft, leading it to be about 170 deg out of time. Recall that there are TWO keyways in the pulleys; the one marked "O" is used on the upper shaft; the unmarked one (well, supposedly according to the manual it's marked "U" but I've never seen that!) is used for alignment on the lower shaft.

Put 'er back together and she's smoother than ever! Which should damn well be the case, since the engine was balanced within a millimeter of its life!

Yup. Just getting my heads out of the clouds, now that she's all back and running.

Gotta cruise over to the SEM PCA web site this morning and register for the June track day.

Between now and then, it'll be an oil and filter change to ditch break in oil and switch back to Mobil-1.

Thanks Joe.

Was a long hard build filled with blood, sweat and tears, but we got her done! Now she's running stronger and better than ever, and I can't wait to get her back out to the track.

Did you clean the fuel injectors and install new o-rings to them? Makes big difference...
