Wasn't their first the Sonnet? Or was that the car? They also make buses. Either way Saabs rock, love the new 9-3.

Here in Finland we have a small car factory; Valmet automotive. It make about 75% of all of the Porsche Boxters. On the same assembly line the make also SAAB 9-3 convertibles.Until quite recently all SAAB cabriolets were made in Finland.Nowadays also in Austria. The first finnish SAAB's were made in 1968.
Most US sold SAAB's in the 80's came from Finland.

Here is a pic that I took at the Paris Air Show. It is not photoshopped. That is a Ferrari emblem on the nose...

That's a Piaggio Avanti-Really nice ride. Now again in production with the finishing touches being done in the USA. And another fact is that the SAAB prop jet in commuter use has never had a major accident.

Michael,

Great pics. When the Rafale (in your last pic) was undergoing flight testing, the Dassault program directors would paint, in large letters, the test flight # on the tail of the aircraft to point out how far ahead it was of the Eurofighter (then the EF2000, now Typhoon )program.
I'm personally a pretty big fan of Eurofighter, although it worries me that they may end up being sold to nations with whom we'll eventually be going up against.
The transport is the An-225 mryia ("dream.") It also had a starring "role" in the latest Bond movie <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />
I was the only person in the crowd booing <img src="graemlins/nono.gif" border="0" alt="[nono]" />

Good to have you back home.

Micah

*Edit*

The Porsche Mooney mentioned earlier

SFR, Anderson, someone needs to put a Turbo'd 3.0 4 banger in a Cessna <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

According to the movie Finding Forrester the BMW logo is "a white propeller zipping in the blue sky" or something like that

The Gripen is the world's most advanced fighter in operational service today. Click here if you want to learn more about it, and see some great photos also:

The Porsche Mooney was made in 1989, I believe. There was only a limited number produced, around 100 or so. While most small aircraft engines have a LOT in common with the 911 configuration, (air-cooled boxer 6s and 4s) The stressors on the powerplant are extreme. The crank is directly connected to the prop and suffers a lot of shock that way. Even though redline is only near 2800 RPMS, The engine spends 90% of its time within a few hundred RPMS of that. The service life is just a couple of thousand hours before major rebuilds are required. Also, if the engine quits, you can't just pull over to the side of the road and call AAA.
It is worth noting that Mooneys are known in aviation circles as the "Porsche" of airplanes, partly because the fuselage has a relatively small cross section allowing it to enjoy greater cruising speeds than aircraft costing much, much more. Also, the tail tilts FORWARD, opposite the norm..just like the 911 putting the engine in the back. (Brian S, on Rennlist,.. his Pops just scored a sweet Mooney. I cleared it for a visual approach earlier this week. Sweet, Bri!)

The best Jet pic EVER

Probably right, but Gripen is the only operational fourth generation fighter today. Probably the cheapest to buy and operate to.

as far as I know, the f22 is operational. and it's 4th gen too. more like, 5th gen actaully.
you can't argue with stealth, thrust vectoring, and supersonic flight without the need for afterburner. but the gripen is very nice too.

The F-22 is still in flight test and is not scheduled to be in operational service for another 3 years yet (2005). The Gripen has been in service since 1997 and well over 100 aircraft have been delivered.

I'm sure that the F-22 will be a great aircraft but the fact is that Gripen is the most advanced multi-role fighter that is both proven in service and available today. What also needs to be taken into account is the overall effectiveness of the system, rather than side by side comparisons of the capabilities of single aircraft. On this basis, then the overall Gripen weapon system effectiveness per dollar (bang for the buck) will probably be unmatched for years and years to come.

cheers
Derek
