oh I know, but buying a good used transmission can be expensive and also hard to find one in the area. but yes still cheaper than a clutch kit / labor for a clutch.

I forgot another symptom my car has is that the shifts aren't really smooth, the car kind of lurches forward or backward if the revs / speed of the car is not exactly right when teh clutch is relased.

stuart from weissach told me that if the engine makes a lot of humming noise when you let off the throttle that could be a sign of a bad clutch also. I have that sound but I thought that was just the noise from engine braking.

hopefully the car won't leave me stranded until I can get it fixed.

I really don't think the clutch job was that bad. It was the most extensive work I've ever done and really found it to be fairly straight forward. There was some frustration, but I wouldn't trade a couple wrenches to my face for 1000 bucks.

Ive got an early transmission that i will sell you for cheap. How does $100 sound? I'm in portland OR, so you could drive down and not mess with shipping.

sounds good. I will find out next monday if it is a bad clutch or bad tranmssion. if it is a shot transmission and not the clutch I'll consider that.

I'd have to get my passport first though to come to portland.

also my car is an 85.5 which I think is different than the early tans at least the mount is diff.

I think the mounts are the same. I think the only differences between the two is that the late car's speedos are from the transmission, and the early cars are from the wheels.
As for the transmission itself, it is in great working condition. I had it in my car while i was rebuilding my LSD trans. It shifts fine.
I'm in no rush to get rid of it, so you can take your time deciding.

well my trans shifts fine also, no grinding when shifting just shakes pretty badly and goes clunk when the clutch engages or when accelerating and then letting off the throttle it goes clunk again (when the engine is braking).

could just be a really shot engine mount or bad clutch. I think the transmission itself being bad and clunking internally is not the most likely cause of this but who knows.

Yea it sounds like the rubber center of the clutch has broke to me.

85.5 has the same mounts as the early cars, 86+ mount differantly, I'm not sure how since I only have delt with early transmissions.

yeah I have a feeling it has too. would the rubber centre disentegrating cause the transmission to shake too much and make a clunk noise upon clutch engagement?

if the clutch is bad I'll also blow my tranmsmission if i keep on having it clunk.

I want to just order a clutch kit right now so I can have it by next week and get it installed asap but I dont' want to find out that it's not the clutch and then spent 600 bucks on a clutch kit.

I'm bringing the car in to the porsche shop on sept 15, until then I drive the car everday to work / school

I forget where, but some place sells only the friction plate. This would be a cheaper alternative then buying a whole kit. Put if your doing a clutch job then you might want to shell out for the kit.

And yes i would think that a bad clutch would make the tranny "thunk". Think of where the force will be, in the transmission. Your problems might just be normal quirks of the car. Ive noticed my car kind of thunks when i release the clutch a little fast, and this is with a brand new clutch.
