Post New (used) wheel and tire pics, help identify :)

Just got home for thanksgiving and I snapped a couple quick pics of the wheels....

They are BBS moda's...thats all I know.

The rear is a 17x9 with a 255 40 BFG R1 and weighs in at 55 lbs (minus a piece of cardboard) according to Fedex's scales. The offset is 48 for the rear. (Factory offset on the turbo S wheel is 60, so I think the 48 offset pushes the tire farther out which = bad, correct?)

Front is a 17x8 with a 235 45 BFG R1 and weighs in at 51 lbs. I didn't check the offset yet.

Here are the sellers pics:
<a href="http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~yarin/Picts/wheels.htm" target="_blank">http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~yarin/Picts/wheels.htm</a>

and here are my pics:
<a href="http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~adrialk/wheel" target="_blank">http://www.eden.rutgers.edu/~adrialk/wheel</a>

Thoughts on the weight? quality? strength?

thanks,
Adrial

Might wanna change the linky to read '.edu' so people can see the pics.

Have you test fit the wheels yet? Aside from the SLIGHT possibility that your tires rub, what's wrong with them filling in the gap at the rear? Weight doesn't look too bad to me, tires are pretty damb heavy by themselves but the wheels certainly aren't light-weights.

thanks, link fixed

I haven't test fit the wheels yet as it just started snowing.

The only reason I'm worried about the offset is that I want to go up to a 275/40 when I replace the tires...and I dont think there's any way that'll fit with a 48 offset...especially when lowered...

thanks,
Adrial

That seems really heavy, what does a really nice wheel like a Fiske FM-10 weigh without a tire. In a 17 X 9" size... Anyone?

Without a tire a light 17x9 would be around 15-17lbs...

factory forged club sport 16x9 is about 21 lbs I believe.

They FEEL light compared to my factory wheel/tire (tires are BFG T/A KDW) combo...but it was a couple months ago that I had the wheels off the car and felt them...

I may just yank em off out of curiosity...but I'd still like some numbers to compare to.

I am curious now. I am going to weigh my 16" PD's. 16x7" and 8". Toyo Proxes 225 front and 245 rears.

These are the wheels that I am getting for my Miata,

They are 14.8lbs for 16x7"

I need to find some nice light tires also

First, a wheel with less offset (lower number) will sit further back in the wheel well, eg. my car uses 23mm offset but I can use later 53mm offset wheels with a ~30mm spacer. You could use a 12mm spacer to get these out to where they belong, to go up to 275's you might be better off with a smaller spacer or none at all. Less spacer will get you away from the fender lip, just watch the inside clearance.

Second, 55LBS!!! !!! My 4 CC's came all in one box (without tires) and even with packaging the box was 67 lbs! One of the online tire places (it wasn't Tirerack) had the weights of various tires, IIRC a 225-50-15 R3SO3 is ~18 lbs and a Kuhmo in the same size is ~22 lbs. This size may seem like a far cry from what you are looking for, but if you look at your front tire size it is only 10mm narrower but has ALOT more sidewall, I doubt it would weigh much less, maybe a little more.

It's the other way around. THe lower the offset, the farther out the wheel sits in the well. That's why Dave needs to use spacers to push his high offset rims out. A 12 mm spacer would give these 48mm offset rims a 36mm effective offset.

55 is quite heavy. A fikse weighs about 18lbs in that size and an avg performance tire will weigh in between 23-26lbs in that size. KDW's are some of the heaviest meats I've weighed. Apparently Pilot CupSports are very light... around 20lbs for that size.

Hugh, Thanks for the catch, I should refrain from thinking before I've had my coffee <img src="graemlins/c.gif" border="0" alt="[ouch]" /> !

Adrial:
First, are you sure the factory wheel's offset is 60mm? On my 944S2, the 'stock' offsets are: 55mm front, 52mm rear. Ya may wanna double check: 60mm seems an awful lot. (Check your stock wheels: on the side they should have something like "8J - 52" or "9J -52" stamped on them.)

Anyway, I like the look of the new wheels, except the carbon fiber's a little over the edge for me. (Is it the real stuff? IF it is, would that bring the weight DOWN, not up?)

I do think they would look great on your car. Just a word of caution: make sure your lug nuts line up properly with the holes in the wheels: Porsche lug nuts are rounded on the bottom to fit the round part of the wheel. (Using non-rounded lug nuts on a Porsche wheel can ruin them!)

Slap then on your car and get some pics!

My FM-10 rear is a 17x10, it weighs 17lbs. The front 17x8 actually weighs more, 18lbs . . .AFAIK, the only way to get a lighter 3-piece wheel is to step up to the BBS Mg race wheel, and even then you only save a pound or so.

Now that I think of it, 60mm may indeed be correct. (I've got two spare front 951 wheels with a 65mm offset)

So: if 60mm is your stock wheel's offset, you may need to roll your fender to prevent rubbing. Also: with that offset, it may be impossible to fit 275/40's in there. (But 275's would sure look nice under there! )

What are you doing with your stock wheels?

These wheels are going to be my track wheels.

My fender is rolled from the factory (another perk of having a turbo S).

The guy that I bought them from had them on a 968 and they didn't rub, so I should be OK...

I'll throw em on in an hour and snap some pics...also will get to see how much clearence I have.

Did someone say track wheels?!?!

Have you decided what tires you are going to use? I still haven't decided whether I'm going with street performance (Z-rated) or R-compound. If it's R-compound, I think I'm going to go with Yokohama A032's. On the street side, I'm thinking of the Kumho Escta MX's. Then again, the Michelin Pilots would be nice....
