Default ls1 engine swap

my buddy has a few complete blocks with low miles 35k or less on them is this a viable option or have the 944's ive seen swaped out been just an *** load of work. it seems that all of the swaps ive seen have been ls1's or2's is this for a reason other than the abundance of availability?

NO. What happened was Renegade Hybrids stopped making the LT1/4 kits all together. They WERE the only guys out there for conversionists to buy kits from. Today they only offer LS kits. Thats why the huge number of LS conversions.

Now, as of like this week, quicktime bellhousings have made a cure-all bellhousing for the 944. You can have an LT1 one week and an LS1 the next all with the same bellhousing.

Cost is about 450 bucks.

Now deciding from an LT ot LS is up to the owner. The LT has a real strong line of aftermarket support where the prices have dropped to pre LT GM V8's. The LS engines aftermarket support is growing very quickly but prices are through the roof on most items. The LS is also a bit lighter and some say prettier? So to each their own I guess.

I have been seeing alot of people coming out of the wood work because of the recent quicktime BH release. Lots of guys with LT1's will be showing up.

Anyway, thats alot of the reason.

As for alot of work....well, depends on who you are mechanically. If youve never turned a wrench or just simply a light duty mechanic, yeah, i guess it can be looked at like that. But if you can change the clutch on a 944, hahaha, you can definitely do the conversion.....easily.

What style slave does that use? Internal or external? That adapts the LS directly to the TT??

Just be aware that if you are going to do it really nice it isn't cheap.

Also know that RH doesn't exactly get you the parts overnight. I ordered my kit in June and just got everything the end of August. It wasn't an issue for me because I have a lot of projects going on and I'm not in any hurry. Just an FYI if you want/need to do it fast.

Its internal. Yes, it adapts every GM V8 from 1965 - 2009+ So if you have an LS or an LT or just a regular ol' 350 layin around, this housing will mate all directly to the TT.

Im hoping they keep it in their line-up of products! The way im thinking, since the 944 V8 crowd is so small, it may not be around very long. Ive seen other people try to make a custom housing and not get the funding to keep the housing going.

Cool, thanks for the info. EXACTLY what i was looking for, i may pick one up ASAP, I;m still sorting out my car, brakes and suspension wise so it will be a while till im ready but that makes it so simple I dont want to lose the opportunity.

This is pretty nice.. How much heavier is the LT1/LS1 to the normal 8v 944 engine?

Basic longblock weights (these numbers are always argued but this is the accepted weights by most):
LS1 = 430 (aluminum block) <---with oil
LT1 = 510 (iron block) <---with oil and dressed as running
944 = 390 (aluminum block) <---this one not sure....no specs as in dry or running or what.

Size?

Those are the numbers they're using? Fully dressed (including all brackets, accessories and exhaust manifolds) LSx and LTx engines aren't that much different in weight - around 60# IIRC. There used to be very large discussions on camaroz28.com about it years ago when I was a participating member.

Yeah. The LS1 weight is just as a long block with oil in it. The LT1 weight is with all ancillaries such as PS, no AC, Alt, oil, coolant...etc. I bet theres a side by side weight comparison on the web somewhere where they compare long block to long block but I havent seen it or want to search for it.

On our board, the weight difference between the LS and LT is always said to be 70lbs. We move the battery for the LT to the rear of the car and the 944 feels the way it did before. The LS guys say its exactly the same without doing anything.
