I have a chance to buy a nice 1988 951, almost all the options, maint history for the last 6 years, clutch 1 year old, belts and seals a couple of months ago. Clean and garaged (persons 2nd vehicle) I talked to the mechanic, he gave his seal of approval. Clean CarFax report
Price...$8500
What do you think?
Thanks

Seems like a fair price...
However the devil is in the details....
Make sure you get a good soild car then worry about price. Buying a junker for cheap may cost you much more than a good car for bit more if you need to fix it. Than again a junker might be what you want depending on what you plan on doing with the car.
Either way $8500 for a 951 in good condtion is a fair price. I would expect prices from $6k to $10K depending on condition and seller's motives.

That sounds right, maybe even a little high for idle. Still though take it to a Porsche mechanic (preferably someone who deals with 951's all the time) and pay for a PPI (should be less than $100) and he could then tell you most everything wrong with the car (like condition of CV joints, brakes, and also knows what to look at as potential problem areas.
Also, don't test drive it unless the previous owner can provide documentation that the timing/balance shaft belts had been looked at in the last 15k miles (replace @ 30, check @ 15). Otherwise it's a ticking time bomb, and you don't want to be in it when it goes.

Whose mechanic was that? His or yours?

It's a bargin if it's in good shape. Mine needs nothing and I'm asking $12.5. The cheaper you go generally the more that needs to be done. It is not unusual for people to spend in repairs what they spent on the car!

$8,500 for an 88 951 in great condition is a steel if you ask me - Im assume alot of work has been taken care of in terms of stuff that usualy goes wrong around 80-90K miles. I wouldnt take less than $10,000 for mine in its condition (and thats with 100,000 miles) - and I would expect to pay at least that for a comparable example. The above comment about paying as much in repairs as you spent on the car is true if youre not careful. Good luck.

No, Its not an 'S' and that was her Mechanic. I do all my own wrenching on my cars and have a good eye for used cars, I'm 43 and ...knock on wood...never got a lemon. I'm an engineer...hands on..in an automotive parts mfg company. From what I see, this person spent a year looking for this car, and has had it for 6 years, kept up on all the maintenance. I just havent seen it yet cuz its a long drive, I'm going to see it on Friday ready to buy if all looks good.

my one year old cpivalueguide lists an 88 951 in fair condition at 9400, in excellent at 13500.
FWIW an 87 is 7900/11475, so it seems right for a fair car.
add koni's tires and brakes and you should be good to go at under 10k if all else works out.

Tom,
Does your guide list an 86 951 in avg condition. (1 owner with records, 145,000 miles)?
I came across it eariler today and am somewhat interested. I started it up an it had a slightly rough idle, but seemed to rev up smoothly. I did not have time to drive it today but might tomorrow.
I currently have a 88 924S, SE
Thanks

That is one clean 924! Good luck with the 951 - is it in the Raleigh area?
Give some thought to joining PCA - the Hurricane Region has a bunch of very active 924/944 members and covers NC from the Triangle to the coast. Our Christmas Party this year is in New Bern and every year we do at least one event in Wilmington.
