Post Stock cooling fan potential

I'm interested in knowing how many cfm's the stock 944 cooling fan pumps out. I may be able to use it for my 944 V8 conversion but if it doesn't cool well enough I'll need to swap it out. The last car this LT1 engine was in ran 160 or lower at all times. I'm hoping I don't have a problem. By the way, I will be using the stock radiator from the 1986 NA I'm converting.

Does anybody else have aftermarket cooling fans? What are you using if you are? If the stock doesn't work I'll probobly go with two 10's or possible three 8's (if they fit). What do you think?

I highly suggest you doing more then using the stock radiator and fans from an 86 for an LT1 conversion...

There are several LT1s on here (944LT1, Predator, etc,) who I'm sure can help. But at first glance, that's what I'd say.

Well I'm going to try the stock before spending 900 dollars on the custom radiator. If it runs hot I can always change it.

Vagus,

Shrink your avatar (pic next to everything you post)

Can't tell ya how many cfm the fans flow, though.

Dumb question ahead- is the "LT1" engine the same as a 928 engine, or is this an American V8?

Well if I still had my Avatar up (which I can't figure out how to shrink it without loosing its resolution) you could tell pretty easily.

Yes its a Small Block Chevy out of a 93 trans-am. Check out my profile for a big picture of the engine dropped inside of the car

sharky, it's an American V8

LT1 is a 350 CI pushrod engine used in many many applications. One of which is I believe the last generation corvette and the current camaro.

It will help his little n/a turn into a firebreathing beast... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" />

The LS1 engine ie. the engine in the most current Camaro, Corvette actully won't fit:-(. Only the LT1 or earlier SBC's

I've been told that the LS1 is actually lighter than the 4-banger origonally in the 944. When the LS1 was experimented with, it actually made the 944's front end sit up higher than stock. This could very possible be a horrible rumor since I heard it from somebody on the internet. The LT1 however makes my car sit pretty low especially since i have 250# springs in the front that make it sit an extra 1.5 inches lower.

Oh, woops.

I responded to your PM btw. I included a link to a resized avatar. Not sure if the quality is good enough, but its pretty much the best I can do.

Why are you doing the conversion anyway Vagus? Just looking for more power or did the car have a blown engine?

The stock 4 cyl was giving me problems that I wasn't ready to pay for. I got the flawless body for smoking $1500 and the car still ran but the engine needed a total overhaul because it smoked. I could have pulled it and done the work but I had access to a LT1 race engine.

I looked a little further into the conversion and decided to give it a go. Now about 7-8K later I'm nearly through with the engine and I'm looking forward to rims, paint and interior.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

I figure the whole thing will cost me ~10-13K before I am done. But this moster is going to be well worth it. See you on the track.

Vagus, We have converted 9 cars now. Out 'mule' car in south florida is using a stock radiator and fans with no overheating problems. You must relocate it approx 2 inches down and 2 inches forward for everything to fit. Fabricating brackets to do this is no big deal. I'm personally using a 951 radiator with the 944 fans and shrouds in my car. With a 160 degree thermostat, the temp never gets to the first tick on the temp guage. With the 180, it stays about 1/16 inch past the first tick. I don't know how much hp your engine is making. I've got ported, polished and matched heads and manifold, along with a comp cam camshaft and roller rockers coming for my car in a week or so. Suspose to give me 125 additional hp. We have plumbed in a remote oil filter and oil cooler in anticipation of some additional heat, but I really think the 951 radiator can handle this with no problems.
