Okay I'll put in for the "other side" My dad was an EMS and a coroner for 11 years. He hated it the day I brought my 5.0 home. "I've scraped alot of kids off the highway in those damn things" He said and told me I was nuts. I got my first porsche at age 15 and sold it before I got my license (84 944 POS). Anyhow I race very frequently and do it for side income. I also love it and it's always fun to hustle people outta their money. Like being a pool shark but I can't shoot pool to save my a$$. I honestly made 2300 last summer in my 951 not bad for some fun. We always get away from town never in town that is stupid! We had a pair of f-bodies race through richmond on the 4 lane area of town and they killed a highway worker as well as one the drivers. I also have a pair of friends who totalled a TA and a Mystic cobra after a race with each other one was backing out of a driveway after getting beat turning around the other wrapped a donut and came flying back and T-Boned him That was stupid. But hey I've won 3 gokarting titiles and now have a midget If I really cared about roadcourses or "honing" my skills I'd still be killing everyone in the midwest with a damn gokart. We traveled yearround racing and our last 3 years had a winning percentage of 87%. Thats ovals and roadcourses. Out of say 150 races per year thats a heck of a percentage. It got boring, simply put. I never have the desire to put the p-car on the roadcourse say putnam park which I have driven a prototype at. The car just doesn't strike me as fun for that although thats what it's built for. Besides I love waxing c-5 vettes and nitroused cars with a little ol 4 cylinder!!! I know most of you won't agree with me but hey my choice I don't care if I die at least I'll be having fun!!!!

Holy ****! You people are so young yet you own brand new cars, and 951's! I'm lost on that concept. Either you have rich parents, or you have rich parents.

Well, I like street racing, but not literally on streets. I'd rather take it to a highway thats empty and take your chances with the guardrail, and ditches. Racing on streets where people live is down right stupid.

It's the innocent person walking on the street, backing out of the drive, etc. Automobiles can be lethal weapons. Ask my brother who was nearly killed by a drunk driver in 86. It's not worth it. $2300 wouldn't even pay for your casket.

A few things to note here:

-Street racing is always a crime

-Street racing risks the lives of the participants and other who have not chosen to participate (the main difference between street racing and track racing - other than a complete lack of common sense).

-In my experiences, the street racers I have come across tend to be some of the stupidest and most complete tools I have ever run across. They honestly lower my expectations for the intelligence of the average person.

-Street racers are generally (and there are exceptions) not good drivers...in terms of both traffic mechanics and skill. They drive like maniacs and take unecessary risks that they aren't skillful enough to get themselves out of.

-Most street racers will not take their cars to a track (other than the occasional run at the local drag strip)...and when they do show up at an autocross with graphics and a wing on a 4 door civic - they get kick their a$$ kicked on the timing sheet.

...and I've already wasted too much time on this...I have no tolerance for these people.

And how will that make your mother feel? Your father?

My baby is older than almost all of you - she's 19 - and I have two older boys. I've gotten that phone call several times, you're child's been in an accident . . . let me tell you, your heart stops and you can't breath. I've been very lucky, all have come through without permanent damage. I don't think I could handle it if anything happened to any of my kids.

Some of their friends have not been so lucky, I've attended their funerals. If you think the only one you can hurt is yourself, think again.

I'm 19 and I agree with most of you that street racing is a stupid thing to do. That being said I'm not above giving it a little boost just to show what my baby can do. i don't exceed the speed limit though and don't participate in actual "races".
quote:
Originally posted by FormulaOne10:

The people who do "street race" don't know what they're doing. Get a couple of Porsche owners on an empty street in the middle of nowhere and you proabbly won't have any problems.

Something to think about, just because.
Street racing is a felony, at least in GA. And here, a fleeing felon can be shot. So, if you street race, see a cop, don't stop, well... Guess what...

I do care if I die or if some idiot turns himself into a thick goo while destroying my property. I also care about my insurance being expensive, because I'm grouped in with the stupid people who have fast cars.
My $24000 Acura costs more to insure than a $52000 Corvette Z06, because of people like you.
It's pretty sad though, that my insurance company wouldn't cover my car getting damaged on an autocross course, but they'd cover this guy losing it at 130mph and hitting a ditch.

I might drive with the faster group of traffic, but I don't 'race' until I get to the skidpad.

since im not sure who you were talking to about that porsche owners thing i should clarify what imeant earlier when i said 996 next to you on an open highway. i didnt mean that because he is a porsche owner it is ok. i meant that once in a while if a guy with an awesome car wants to play everyone has given in and gotten on it for a second or 2... while this is still not the best idea it doesnt fit my idea of street racing, as long as these 2 people dont go over board with the speed...
now i feel like i am contradicting myself making an excuse for certain situations but whatever.

i picked 996 for my example because the other day a guy in a 996 did just that when i pulled up next to him on highway but in that case i didnt respond because there were other cars around.

btw adrial you are on rennlist too much

I hate when people bring up the track when it comes down to racing and what not. The track doesn't show crap. Just because you track your car it doesnt mean you can outdrive, outhandle other drivers. We're all human, so when something happens people react in different ways.

Adrial, don't take this to the heart, but when you were driving your 951 back home and you hydroplanned, did your tracking skills save you from getting into trouble. I doubt it, because when something serious happens we all react differently. Track or no track, we all can cause accidents and kill people.

How do you know it's an empty street? Cars travel pretty fast. People walk outside. Bicyclists come off of paths and merge with the road. An empty street can become populated quickly.
A race track is a controlled environment. There are only a few ways to get onto it, it's separated from the spectators and pits, and people there know that others are racing.
In street racing, there are no such controls in place. That is what makes it so dangerous.
