I'm there with you! $20 every 2 years for each car here in Cinci. Everyone gets checked. Then, add the cost of yearly registration... $65.

Total ripoff. And not to mention that the adjacent counties do not have to e-check. Grr...

I'm with you on E-check. It's totally worthless but it's a big cash cow for the gov't so it'll never go away.
Two years ago my 944 didn't pass due to a gas cap seal yet an old Buick with bungee cords holding the doors on passed with flying colors. WTF?
When we bought my wife's car it had just under 2000 miles on it and still needed the e-check because it was considered a used vehicle. It still had the clear plastic on the back seat!

Chris, you're really going to cringe when you have to take the 930 in for ol' Bubba Jim Bob to test.

Well, since this seems to have become an OH e-check thread - you guys who have another car should really just get the P-car registered as a Collector's car. I just did it in May. It cost me $5.09 more than the regular registration, but it saves me $19.50 every other year on the e-check (not to mention the worries associated with the e-check).

Dale.

Hey Dale, does the car need to be 20 years old?

Oh yeah, get back to work!

No, the lady at the Columbus Special Plates office (800-589-8247) said every Porsche qualifies. They have some make/model book they reference. Even if the car isn't in the book, you can also get the plates if you are in some sort of recognized club focused on the particular vehicle. Basically, any thing that proves the car is collectible to you is good enough for them.

I thought 25yrs was considered a classic in Ohio. At least eligible for classic plates. I dont think any of mine would quality as collector, but then again, the 959 at Taj had a REALLY cool collector plate on it -- sort of like a Euro plate. Very long and rectangular. Maybe thats just for show cars though. Is that 959 even street or smog legal?

I'd like to know where he got that.
I think he's allowed 2000 miles per year under the show/display rules.

Yep thats the plate. This is kind of cool actually. I havent titled or registered the 930 yet but when I go to the BMV tomorrow or Monday Im going to ask for a collector registration. Does that also entitle you to collector plates? Im thinking of getting vanity plates and dont know how many spaces are on collector plates.

Not having to get it E-Checked is two major thumbs up. Im sure if I mentioned all of this to the BMV buffoon behind the counter though they will have NO IDEA what Im talking about and will try to convince me I need to register it like any other car if its under a certain age.

I need some argumentive firepower in case the buffoon gives me trouble -- which is their sole purpose in life.

So we're saying a collector car does not fall under the E-Check umbrella?

UDPride - Collector plates are completely different from Historic (classic) plates. A collector car could be brand new. The lady at the Columbus office literally said "Every Porsche qualifies for Collector Plates." I even replied "Even a cheap one like mine?" and she said "Yes." You must make a trip to the local BMV for the sole purpose of picking up the Collector plate registration form. You CANNOT actually register for Collector plates in person at the BMV. It has to be done via mail to Columbus. The back of the Collector registration form has all the details about character combinations if you'd like to get personalized Collector plates. And yes, you need no e-check with Collector plates.

Let us know what cool personalized plate you get for that 930!

Two days ago.

I hope collector plates allow 7 characters like normal plates. I want to get "UD PRIDE".

Thanks for the info. I'll title it and just get a temp tag to tie me over.

I was pulled over in Forest, MS on my trip to SC last month. The policeman told me my TX plates registered to a Buick. He was then on his cell phone, claiming he was trying to reach his dispatch. Then a second cop car pulls up behind him. This policeman looked like the father of Adam Sandler in the movie 'Waterboy'. He is obviously looking over my car, checking things out like he has never seen one before.

He then asks, 'Is this front engine or rear?' after looking the car over for a good 5 minutes. I am also leaning against the rear spoiler, have baggage and a computer stashed in the trunk easily visible to even the worst vision.

Then he continues to the passenger-side to speak with my brother. He then asks 'Is this a fast car?' and before I have the chance to answer he replies with repetitive 'Come on now, come on now!' demands.

His next comment results from him spotting the gear-selector (this is after 10mins of eyeing the car), 'Stick shift, OOOOOOOOOOH BOY OOOOOOOOOH BOY!'.

Now, I have been in Texas a good 13 years and have never come across anybody fitting a 'typical southerner' idiot like this guy, nor have I been pulled over for over 15 minutes without receiving a ticket. EVER!

At least they did not ticket me. I was pulled over for cruising in the passing lane (new to me), and this turned out as the only nuisance on my trip.

Almost to 200k miles!!! What a milestone.
