Creampuff Decision
I went to the show at Hershey to find a 951, however the selection was rather limited.
One guy was trying to sell an '88 turbo for $8250 obo, but the car was repainted and had its engine replaced. The owner did not know much about the car, but it didn't look too bad. My mechanic looked over the car and said everything seemed ok, but I decided to let it go.
There were a few other 951's, but most wanted too much money (and one was the one that I had bid on on eBay and pulled my bid).
I waited around an '87 Alpine White 951 for the owner to show up and took a look at it. The car is in _excellent_ condition, the owner drove the car down from New York state and the car didn't look like it had any problem with it. (At this point it had been sitting in the same spot all day, no oil leaks and the engine looked very clean.) I had my mechanic look it over and he said it looked to be very nice.
Here's the problem though. He wanted $11k for the car, which I could do, but I don't want to spend over $10k on the purchase of this car. I offered the owner $9.5k, and he said he would like to think about it.
My mechanic/stepdad told me to stay with my offer, but I really don't know what to do. The car has some transmission trouble that I would want to take care of(2nd gear is hard to shift into) and the clutch will need to be replaced sometime in the future (even though it was done at 40k miles...), so I think I can use those to my advantage.
Did anyone else take a look at this car at the show? Do you think this car is worth $10k (Not like $500 makes much of a difference, but its money I can use towards the transmission work or clutch)?
Also, this isn't _exactly_ what I wanted to get, but it is the nicest car I've seen and the only thing I would change would be the exterior color. (I like Zermatt Silver).
Does anyone have a picture of the car bychance?
TIA

The second gear notchiness is typical in our cars. Switching to Swepco synthetic oil helped my car tremendously. Also: in the cold, double clutching relieves alot of the notchiness going into second.
The clutches on the turbos are spring centered units, not like the rubber-centered hubs on n/a's and S/S2's: they do last longer, especially if they aren't driven hard.
How many miles on the car? Does the PO have maintenance records? According to Excellence, a 1987 951 in excellent condition is valued around $9950.00, so at $10k, you're in the ball park, if it is indeed in excellent condition. (Don't forget: even cars that are truly in excellent condition may need some attention and $$!)

Hold for now. If it's exactly what you want but for color and can live with the color then fold in a week.
How much time and money are you gonna spend looking for one as nice as the one you saw? How much will you pay for the same car in the color you like?
Shall I continue or are you going through the above mental gyrations already. Just remember - Dont fall in love with it unless you can take it to bed!

Thanks for all your help. I think I'm going to stay with the price I offered and see what happens.
For those of you who couldn't make it to the show, here's a picture of the car:

Nick,
Hold pat on the price. A clutch will eat a chunk of your budget, as will the inevitable "small" things you will want to fix/replace/update. The car does look nice though.
BTW, what's wrong with Alpine White??

Eric,
Alpine white was my 2nd choice, but its still a color I want to get. My first choice in colors was a nice Zermatt Silver or Silver Rose.
I think the car looks dead seksy in white though

Alpine White is a great color IMHO
I paid $7500 for my 87, 2 years ago
94k miles
The PO had just spent $3500 in regular repairs.
I looked for 3 months before I found this one.
Just take your time, the right one, at the right price will show up.

Nick-
That car looks SWEEEET! And I think Alpine White is a great color, specially because you can see the script "Turbo" nice and clearly! Also, looks like a sports car in white--says "hey, here I am!"
I have Zermatt Silver, and although it's a great color, would rather have White. The silver rims go better with white too!
Good luck!

It looks very much to me like those are the 15" phone dials. The rears are supposed to be a little more deep dish if they were 16". And they just look a little small. Or maybe its 4 16x7s. Maybe its me, just pointing it out, though.
