Post Groaning Noise

I've posted a couple weeks ago but didn't get any response so I'll try again. I've checked the archives and there was a posting very similar but my vehicle doesn't have power steering.

Here we go... when backing out of the driveway in the morning there is a moaning or groaning noise from the driver side engine compartment when I turn the wheel. The noise goes away while driving but returns the following day. What gives? Other postings have indicated the fluid reservoir is low for the ps rack but mine is manual. Does the manual steering rack have to be lubricated?

Your contributions would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like something may be binding up. Possible ball joint weare or in need of replacement. When is that last time you had your front end aligned?

I had to make up a special 12 mm thread grease fitting and then fill all other former banjos with caps, but I haven't had any problems with a grease filled power rack.

This is a bit of a long shot, but there is a fairly common problem with the S2’s making a groaning sound from the oil pressure relief valve. However, this valve is located under the oil filter. This moan usually happens at low rpms, mine does it between 1,000 and 2,000 rpms.

If this is the problem, people usually replace the O-rings. From what I understand, this moaning from the oil pressure relief valve does not damage the engine.

Michael: I believe the moaning noise is the same one I get in my 951 when it's cold in the morning. I've heard it and can repeat the noise if I slowly move the rpm's from 2000-1000-2000-1000. It only makes the noise on when going from 2000 down to 1000.

The moaning noise happens without engaging the clutch. I would be drifting backwards down my driveway but when I crank the wheel it happens.

TaboII, I just recently had the passenger side control arm replace and the shop did a "mickey mouse" alignment. A string from the front and rear wheel test. What is the procedure for a front end alignment? I've been noticing recently, vibrations on the steering wheel at different speeds and more noticeable during large radius turns. Ghezz I hope its not the other ball joint! Cost me almost $1000 cdn last time. Should I take it to the Porsche dealer or a company that specializes only on alignments? How long and what its going to set me back?
