I can write a poem about the greatness of this job!! It is awesome to lay on my back while undoing the stupid nuts!! Has anyone done this before? I have lost 2 bolts under the carpeting, nevermind the washers.

I did this on my 86 turbo last weekend (along with the master cylinder, fluid reservoir, hard and rubber brake lines, etc. etc.), I used a strip of refrigurator magnet (the flexible stuff) after peeling back the insulation/carpet a bit, didn't loose anything. Whenever I work in that area I either slide the seat all the way back, and lower it or take the steering wheel off. Makes things go much easier IMO.
Had to weld the firewall around the clutch slave cylinder on my former 84 last week too, that wasn't much fun either...

I removed the seat completely when my back started to cramp. What is the advantage of putting the nuts on the inside? Do they always have to make it imposible for the do-it-yourselfer? Dont say it.

I have thought that a few times. I struggled to get 1 nut off the damn thing last week and decided to leave it in while I paint the engine bay. Sad... it is the only thing I skimped on so far, but 6'4" does not ball up well under the dash. My back still hurts.

Removing the nuts on the brake booster is a PITA job. Using an assortment of universal joints and extensions with an air wrench does make things a bit easier.
I'm still not looking forward to putting mine back in though.
Wayne.
