how much is too much?

how much is too much?
There is a 951 I am close to buying. The only hiccup at this point is the price negotation. First off the car is in good condition. I have taken it to a shop and had it looked over. The main issues were that the a/c is gone (the mechanic thinks it is the a/c clutch), all four tires need to be replaced badly, and the driver's seat controls do not move the seat. Other then those issues everything looks good. The car has had a bunch of mods done to it which include; turbo, boost control, chip, and mid level stero system. The dealer is asking 10,000 but will fix the a/c and get me whatever tires I want for wholesale price. I think the car is worth closer to 8500 or 9000 included the a/c being fixed. It is an 87 white. Should I cough up the 10 or am I right in thinking that is too much? It sits right now at 99,000 miles just shy of that 100k.

You didn't mention the service history, especially when the belts/pump was last done. Prices do vary a bit regionally, but in my area If the car is in good shape and the service is up to date 10-12,000 is about right. The seat controls likely need cleaning.

According to the April 2002 Excellence Mag, a "good" '87 944 turbo should go for $7433. (Poor is $6537 & excellent is $9950) I know that a car is worth whatever someone is willing to pay, and that by buying through a dealer they need to make a profit, but I think the Excellence #'s are pretty realistic. Does the car have records?? Waterpump, timing belts, clutch, etc.?? If these things are within the last 10K miles then it may be worth it. If not, or there are no records, then you could have $3500 in these items alone.........good luck

that is another issue (i knew there was something i was forgetting), there isn't any paper work on the car. the mechanic did say the belts and water pump are in good condition. but the car has also been sitting in this dealers lot for a year due to someone making a deposit and never returning.

been sitting in this dealers lot for a year due to someone making a deposit and never returning.
The dealers I have dealt with had a "pay in 30 days or I keep the deposit" policy. A year sounds a bit strange to me.

No Way...........Of course he's going to say there in good shape...he's trying to sell you the car!!!! He doesn't give a CRAP if while you're driving it off the lot the timing belt snaps & have to spend 5 grand to fix your engine.......BE PATIENT YOUNG JEDI. <img src="graemlins/drink.gif" border="0" alt="[cherrsagai]" />

go look at the recent posts by "ian" there are numbers of what hes about to pay. also look at "nickhance" he just bought a turbo a lot nicer than what you're describing his first post has a $$$ asking price.

I'm a bit concerned with the use of the word mechanic as opposed to a true PPI by a dealership or 944 specialist. Maybe I'm reading to much into your post, but I have to ask - Did this mechanic know what to look for?
At any rate, offer the guy $8500 (if that's what you want to pay) and then tell him to call you when he can meet your price. You have to be willing to walk away to get the best deal. If not, then your gonna pay high dollar for what ever you buy. I've NEVER bought a car and then didn't see one two weeks later that would have been just as nice or even better.
