Post Strange smell in car....

I have a smell in the car that kind of smells like stale gas. It doesn't smell like oil, and it doesn't smell like raw fuel. It smells more like the corner of my garage where I keep my lawnmower. It's hard to describe. Whether I have my windows open, or drive with my A/C on, the end result is that I always stink after driving my 951. I can smell it on my clothes for a good 1/2 hour at least after driving the car. This also applies to passengers.

I've tried airing it out, and cleaning it out, to no avail. There appears to be no single location where the smell is strongest.

Any ideas where this smell could be coming from?

I know I'm a posting freak today - I'm just trying to get caught up....

Muchas gracias!

The Beast!

Or maybe an oil leak dripping on your exhaust? Just kidding...sort of.

Try tomato paste.

Do you park in the garage next to your lawnmower?

Sorry, I have no idea (as you can tell). Just wanted to stick the Seinfeld allusion in there. <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

Check your door and hatch seals for seperations.

Also, I had a faint smell of gas after I bought the car. A new charcoal caninster got rid of that.

Hard to say without crawling around the car myself.

Check your fuel lines for a hair line crack or pin hole leak under the cabin. It may be small enough to "leak" only when operating/driving with the lines under pressure. This leak could possibly wafting up into the cabin when driving. I haven't had this problem with the 944, but did on the old reliable Buick where the car also smelled like fuel under operation...noticable when I was stopped at the lights.

In the drivers fender. You need to take off the plastic shield to get to it. It is used to trap fuel vapor. With age they get full and start to stink.

Jax - low pressure will vacuum exhaust fumes through a questionable rear hatch seal. Took me a long time to figure that out as a kid with a 72 240z.

i as well have a horrible gas smell problem. i checked the fuel sender, but it is bone dry in there. i will check the fuel lines when i get a chance, but i would like to locate that charcoal thing first.

perry, can you give me a discription of what it looks like, and you said it was in the drivers fender? are you talking about removing the wheel well cover? or is there something different i should be looking for?

thanks for the help guys! (i should have posted something about this along time ago)

Yea, remove the wheel cover. There are like 5 plastic 10mm nuts, and it pulls right out. The canister is large, and is held in by 3 bolts. You'll see it. It is in front of the door, in the fender. That big vac line that runs across the back of the firewall and into the drivers fender leads to it.

There is a fuel line that runs from your gas fill that vents the extra gas from the filler lip outside the hole. It is supposed to drain to the ground.
I had a bad problem at one time. I had to reconnect the hose.
You have to take off the inner trim panel, the metal cover, scrape the goop carefully as you remove it (you'll know what I mean) and voila', you can inspect all the gas lines.

Have fun. <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />
