Default possible combo purchase opportunity * PICS ADDED*

first off, its not for me, but a friend. i've shown him clarks garage and hes read the entire "purchasing a 944" section and more. so he knows what hes getting into.

car#1- 1986 944 parts car. broken timing belt. so the top half of the motor is basically no good. body and interior are decent. LOTS of good parts to use or sell.

car #2- 1986 944. runs seemingly good, has kind of a fluctuating idle, shouldnt be hard to fix. everything electrical works. needs new timing belt, tires, and mabey water pump? needs paint, interior not the best.

will try to post pics soon.

we talked him down to 3k (for the pair). i told him (my friend) to add atleast another 2k for the maintenance that needs to be done to the car hes planing on driving. isnt that about right? we plan on doing most of the work ourselves, atleast what we can do. really, probably not that much

my question is, do yall think its a good idea? were both on the fence about it.

sry, no exterior pics of good car, but its white and in need of fresh paint.

and the parts car, have you ever seen paint like this? and that IS a chrome strip near the bottom

Thanks,
Justin

I wouldn't buy anything without a PPI to at least tell me what needs to be done. You may have more knowledge and experience than me, but that's my go-no-go procedure.

LOL now THATS funny!!!!

actually it hasnt had a state inspection yet, but we will make sure that gets done before purchase. and i know of a good shop around here that deals with alot of 944s to look it over for me.

pick the car with the better body and interior of the two, swap the better mechanical stuff to it...part out the remaining crap and drive on!

$2k = do it
$2.5k = maybe
$3k = no rips in seats and good to great condition everything else and you have time/inclination to work on them

well he just dropped the price to $2800
so Legoland951, i guess that puts it at mabey. the seats are ripped to hell and the paint is screaming for help.

but if the inspections turn out good and there is nothing mechanically wrong with the car, he could slowly fix up the rest. taking and selling from the parts car in the process.

and ive already called dibs on some things off the parts car.

If you're gonna put ~5k into a 944, why not do it up front? You'll save yourself the heartache and you'll have a friggin perfect car. 3500 should buy you an extremely clean and well taken care of 944.

you have a point, i bought mine in excelent condition for 3k, and that was over 3 years ago. in my neck of the woods, its hard to find these cars in that kind of condition with owners that are willing to part with them.

and also, ive got a little bit of auto body experience under my belt, and this car doesnt need much. and it would be a perfect candidate for the $50 paint job
