Hi
While replacing my rotors I noticed a little play in the rear axle on both sides. It this normal? Or should I have no play whatsoever.

Quite a bit of difference between the 83 and the 88.
Are the castle nuts on the 83 tight and have the cotter keys in them?
If so then there should be little to any play as these nuts are torqued to over 300 foot pounds.

I should probably clarify my post that it is the real axle shaft.
Edit - SoCal, I don't think the castle nut on the right side was as tight as it should have been so we tighted it. There still is a little play. Left side was tight.

Loose castle nuts -- no cotter key -- will let the splines in the hub wear against the splines on the hardened stub axles.
Not good.
There are two seals on the early stub axles. The inner one has a tendency to harden and shrink away from the spacer that is also the surface the seal rides against. This lets water in to corrode the inner bearing -- a ball bearing.
The outer bearing is a roller. The ball bearing is nominally tight. The roller will have a little play. If you can move the stub axle with the wheel attached in and out then there are problems. Having a bit of movement up and down is expected from the roller bearing.
