Post Do blank ignition keys fit ALL 944s??

I see these nice lighted key blanks on eBay and I'd like to get one since my car came with a hardware store key that says 'ILCO' and 'X9 73VB' on it.

The ads say that they fit 85.5 and up cars?
Did Porsche change the ignition shape or something?

I see some keys that are not the nice lighted crest that say they fit all years.. and I see some key blanks that have no head at all..just the blank metal part itself that you fit into your own keyhead, but again, they say 85.5 and up.

Can someone shed some light on this key issue for me and point me to where I can get a nice key for my 83??

Thanks!

The crested key heads will hold many different shafts, but not all shafts can be cut to fit 944s.

I bought mine from pelican parts. It has the lighted key head with the removable key. On their page it says it is for all 944s. I have not have a chance to have it cut yet so I am not sure... It looks REAL nice tho. I am also using the bad looking Ilco key and I think the 21 bucks for it is a very good deal.

These lighted key heads/keys do work on the early cars. I wore out my first one after ten + years and just got a new one off Ebay, for example,

<a href="http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1873276797" target="_blank">http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1873276797</a>

This seller also sells the key shaft to fit your car.
