There are several things I like to do while in elevators to pass the time. One of my favorites lately is to draw a little square on the floor with chalk and announce to the other passengers that "this is my personal space". Usually that makes most of them shy away and be quiet, but sometimes somone will be a smart-*** and say something witty. If that happens, I start chanting in backwards pig latin and then say in my best demonic voice: "I must find a more suitable host body" while staring at said smart-***.
Its all in good fun and usually no one gets hurt.

new programs can read the capchas and provide the correct responses. this is hitting some of the webmail providers (hotmail, yahoo, gmail) pretty hard.
Another method is that in low-wage countries, they pay people pennies for every xx forums/email address they register at or create. These valid registrations/addresses are then sold to spammers for $xx per 10,000 addresses or whatever. So these low wage workers sit and register on forums or create email addresses all day.
