Following the excellent article by Myles Garmonsway on the 928 forum, I thought that I would have a go at reconditioning my noisy radiator fans.
Followed the article but I also desoldered the circuit board from the backplate, replaced the carbon brushes, powder coated all the parts before reassembly and used stainless steel rivets to put them all back together.
Should be good for another 20 years!

McMaster has them complete with springs (look half way down the page), they were about $12 each. I just measured the old ones and found the exact same listed.
Desoldering/soldering was easy with a 30w iron, the circuit board is very sturdy and you are unlikely to mess-up. Once assembled I turned the motor over 100 times by hand to bed-in the new brushes to the commutator.

Nice! Just saved both threads to my computer... never know when I'll need/want to do this, and saves me from searching in the future!

You just need the brushes (4) and the bearing (1). The brushes are from McMaster and the bearing # is in the original post above. Total cost is about $60 for a set of brushes and a bearing. The powder coating cost me nothing as I was having a bunch of stuff done and they threw these parts in with the mix. There is one other bush at the front, but it is bronze and showed no sign of wear (Porsche overengineering).
The only other thing is that this is a dirty job, 20+ years of carbon dust to clean, so wear a mask. And you do need to be able to handle a soldering iron & desoldering tool with some ability.

Definitely an older thread but one worth reading.
its neat to see the fan motors rebuilt and restored! Gives me an idea of what I'm up against should the need arise.

Just don't do what I did and pound on the shaft with a hammer. I ended up with a broken commutator and a new fan. It was seized on there tight and needed a press to be removed.

@boom10ful : No affiliation, but I used these guys when I was rebuilding my alternator: https://www.maniacelectricmotors.com
