Stereo Question
I'm looking to buy new speakers for my '87 N/A, and have a few questions.
The front speakers I'm looking at are 4x6", but just a little too deep (like 1/8"). I think I'm just going to use some washers & make a foam spacer. They will clear the dash, so all should be good there.
For the rear I heard that 87 & newer cars have 6.5" openings with adaptors for 4x6" speakers, and then factory 4x6" speakers (although you can remove the adaptor & put in a 6.5" speaker). Is this true?

When I replaced my speakers I noticed a plate (the adaptor you are talking about) in the rear where I could take it off and put 6.5" speakers there, wish I would have known that before I baught the 4x6" speakers. My car is an 89 944NA.

Yeah, I'm going ahead & getting 6.5" speakers & then if they don't fit, I'll return them (Crutchfield has a good return policy about that).

Which brand/model are you getting? You might check out Sound Domain. I've found they normally have better prices than Crutchfield and (for me at least, Crutchfield has a distribution office in Charlottesville, VA) I don't have to pay sales tax.

Woah woah woah. Keep in mind. Once you remove the bracket for the 4x6 and mount the 6 1/2, there will be an opening on one corner (where the 4x6 was). It takes a little time, but you can easily make your own bracket. I did, dremmel tool helps.

Yeah, I wasn't really expecting a simple swap job, but I'd feel much more comfortable adding an adaptor plate than taking a grinder to my car. At least this way if I really mess things up I can always put the 4x6" ones back in (although I doubt that'll happen).

I didn't mean to grind your car out! I meant that you will need to create a plate to fill the space. Simple fix, but try to make the plate out of the sturdiest material you can possibly work with.
I used Aluminum the first time...sucked.
