I have heard that you can join your local region w/out joining national. & You don't really need to be a member to attend events in most regions, but you may get a discount w/ membership.
Regarding crappy local regions, unfortunately some volunteer run organizations don't get as much done as others, weather its due to lack of volunteers or whatever.

Another big factor is the size of the region (which varies greatly) and the geography. Some regions have few people in lots of area and it gets harder for them to get a group together than others. I still think the membership facilitates doing a lot more than if I wasn't a member. And while many times you can be welcomed as a guest, that is not always the case.

As mentioned in the other threads, it all depends on how active your chapter is. My region(Allegheny) has many activities year-round from fun-runs to track events(Beavercreek) to formal black-tie dinners. The only event which I attend on a regular basis is the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix, which for me, makes it all worthwhile

Your PCA experience may varied based on your local region. Sorry to hear about the bad experiences elsewhere. I too am NNJR, and certainly get my moneys worth. It's a great club. You get the Panorama month Porsche Magazine, and the Local Porscheforus Magazine. In addition to the DE events, we have numerous social events (food, beer, cars), Concours events (5 this year), Rally (also 5 this year) and access to a mountain of information from experienced Porsche People (Ex-factory folks, and enthusiasts with 40+ years of hands experiences). Access to see, touch, hear GT1's GT2, GT3? I have even had the chance to drive a new twin turbo. Most of our events have a heavy turn out (100+ at the last concours).
Rennlist is a great list, and I highly reccommended it, but it is virtual. Nothing replaces the real thing. It is hard to replace the chill of hearing and seeing a 956 blech fire from its exhaust, viewed from two feet away.
You need both. YMMV
