Default so which suspension/brake parts are directly ...

interchangable between early and later cars? as in no modification required?

all sway bars? what about weltmeister, tarrot etc? M030?
what about shocks/struts? interested in coilover suspension (like Billstein Escort, or LEDAs)
and as far as brakes - obviously a nice solution, and probably cheaper, is the Rennbway Wildwood kit, anything else?

just getting a feel before the car goes in jackstands and gets ripped apart

sway bars are (for the most part) interchangeable. I believe there are some exceptions, but I have 951S sway bars on my 924S, so I know they work.

Early and late N/A brakes are the same

Early and late front shocks are different (early are rebuildable, late are not)

rear shocks might be the same, I don't remember.

Front spindles are different insomuch as the early cars had a provision for the speedo whereas later cars do not

yeah that's kind of what I'm looking for

any fitment issues with Weltmeister or those Tarrot (sp?) bars

and am I going to have trouble fitting something like Ledas coils on the early car? or it's a straight "bolt in" thing?

83-85 rear shocks are different than 85.5 and later. The lower mounts are different due to the different trailing arms.

83-86 N/A struts are all interchangable with the same spindle spacing and are insert-type.

87-onward N/A struts have narrower spindle spacing, the bolt distance where they mount to the spindle is different, and they are "hacksaw-type", meaning to rebuild you cut the strut to drop in a new special insert or you completely replace. These share the same mounting pattern as the 86-onward 951 cars.

Spindles are the basically the same in regards to bolts and spacing at the strut mount for 83-86. 83-85 have provisions for the speedo pick-up.

Leda coil-overs should bolt up provided you purchase the correct set-up for your year of car, taking into account any swaps or mods you may have done to the suspension if you have made it different than stock.

Rear shocks for 86 and up will not fit 83 - 85. The early 944 used 1.87" shocks in the back. 86+ are 2" diameter.

A complete rear suspension assembly (including torsion bar carrier) out of an 86 will bolt right up to an early car. Then you could use a Leda setup. 87 and up had a different offset so you would have to change the stub axles and use late offset wheels in the rear (which means goodbye to Fuchs and Cookie Cutters).

Roman944: I have some early 944 suspension parts that may help you. PM me if interested.

ok then going that same route: what entails in "torsion bar delete"? can coils be used then?

Its not the diameter of the rear shocks that is the issue, its the bottom mount configuration. Meaning that you still need to take that into account when deleting the rear torsion bars and going to a coil-over set up.

It is a little hard to say. Everthing will bolt up, but some will take more parts than others. I run the aluminum rear trailing arms on my 84 chassis, but had to swap the spring plates to do it. That means basicly the entire rear t-bar assembly with trailing arms. When you do that you need the longer 1/2 shafts too. I could run steel from arms to aluminum. I perfer the steel and run those.

Now the 87 and later 944 cars uses late offset suspension so it is not as easy to swap. It still can be done however.

It really depends on which parts from what year to what year as to how easily it will swap over.

Leda will build to spec, so it doesn't matter what year your car is. Just don't buy unknown used ones. Also, let them know if you are doing torsion delete or not.

wasn't sure about that! that's really nice to know. So a place like RedlineRennsport (http://www.http://redlinerennsport.h....com/LEDA.html ) ? Or contact LEDA (whatever shows up on Google Search?)

any worries about removing rear torsion completely? or something like Kokeln kit would be a nice replacement?

not really wanting to swap trailing arms etc. - I think if I wanted to go that far I'd just do torsion bars

thx + keep this up! I have lots of time to do the thinking and every bit helps

make this a "rennlist race car project"
