mounting an amp
I'm putting a stereo in and need to know a good place to mount the amp.
I was thinking the big hole behind the rear right wheel, but that might be a problem because of the restricted airflow with the trunk mat in.
The amp I'm getting is 3"x12"x13".
Also, what's the best way to get an 8g line from the battery to the trunk? Is there a decent firewall grommet near the glove box?

I just installed my amp on the mat of the trunk.
What wattage is your amp producing?
Usualy you want to use 4 gauge wire for a true 12V feed.
are you adding speakers in the cubbies as well?

8 Gauge? You are crazy if you think that will be thick enough for a big amp back in the rear.
And you better fuse that wire at the battery if you don't want to catch on fire. And you may need to drill a hole through the firewall for neat installation. So need a grommet. And some harness sleeve. And ...

There is a hole in which I ran 2 gauge (I think, its huge, the 10' weighs a ton) wire through. Its right where the antenna passes through the firewall to go to the windsheild. Look right behind the battery, if you can't find it I'll go take a pic.

I ran mine the same as Brad. 2 gauge Monster cable, fused.
I mounted a total of 1100 watts with my 4 channel and 2 channel Kenwoods in the spare tire well. I have run the amps at full power for about an hour, and no heat problems at all.
Don't need the spare as I am running 17's, and I have AAA! (a must!)

I made a custom panel to fit in the left cubby. The amp has a pc processor style fan that blows on the circuit board. No problems. I ran a wire from the battery thru the grommet on the driver side of the fan blower under the hood. It drops the wire right down by the pedals. Then ran it under the carpet to the back.

in the passenger footwell where the computer is mounted (deending on the year)to mount a medium sized amp. You could run the power wire right through the firewall where all the other computer wires travel no problem. A nice short run and you don't have to spend 40 dollars on 4 gauge all the way to your trunk.

I've had good success mounting amps on the wooden floorboard of the passenger's front footwell. Nice hidden location and keeps your wiring run short from the battery and components. Put some duct tape over the metal screw flanges; the wood mounting surface keeps the amp body nicely isolated from grounding.
I also built a lightweight cover from relatively thin wood veneer with large holes drilled into it for ventilation, and mounted it to the board to protect the amp from passenger's feet.
YMMV Al

If you put the amp on the passenger floorboard, does it get kicked around a lot?
I don't get lots of passengers, but I'd hate to have one kick out a wire.
Interesting spot though, I'll have to take a look.
Is the floor wood there already, or did you add wood?
