Default How to clean oxidized aluminum...

Hey guys,

What's the easiest way to eliminate oxidization from aluminum valve covers and the timing cover? Short of pulling the motor, is there an easier way to do it without scratching the metal? Mine isn't so bad, but it just doesn't look as nice as some of the lower mileage vehicles do.

Thanks!!!

I used one of those little detailing wire brush thingies followed up with some metal polish. It helps to have a couple beers while you're doing this.

Now, I really don't know for sure so this is coming straight from what someone else told me somewhere in the course of my life.

But when aluminum oxidizes does it really form a film that helps protect it from further oxidation? I was told not to clean aluminum oxide because it protects the aluminum underneath.

There are a number of aluminum polishes. Mother's make a polish that will take off oxidation.

Under normal condition, when aluminum rusts, it creates a white residue. Albeit unsightly, it acts as a protectant. I have used NAPA brand aluminum brightener, and it works great! Just keep in mind it removes any clearcoat/protectant that's on the metal. It is an acid.

The best thing to do is remove it, blast it, and paint/clear it to keep it looking nice.
