Post Bike Rack

Hello all.

I was wondering what bike racks people are using on their 944s? I have an 85.5 and need to transport two mountain bikes. Has anyone tried the rack sold by Performance Products (f/k/a Automotion)? Is the license plate area of the car able to hold such loads?

Thanks for any info.

I found one at a local bike shop for 100.00 that would work perfectly, too bad I don't remember the name of it for you I do remember the way it worked though. The only point where it rested on the car was the bumper, two traps connected to the lip at the front of the rear hatch and two went under the car. With that setup you are sure to avoid run-in's with the rear wing. Sorry I can't remember the company that made it. If i'm by there soon i'll pop in and let you know.

I head about this a few days ago. A guy went to a Porsche junk yard. Found another sun roof hatch the same color as his. Then he actaully bolted a bike rack to it. Drilled though the metal and lining and everything. Now when he wants to take his bikes somewhere he just switches out the roofs and that's it.

Of course I wouldn't open the roof with the weight of a bike up there, but it serves it's purpose without having a bumper type rack letting the bikes bounce around back there.

Cool

I though I'd seen a 944 bike rack that bolted to the license plate area a few years ago in a catalog, but the last catalog that had it in only indicated one for a 911.
Since I have two bikes to occaisionally carry, and sometimes pull a small "track trailer" with my reenactment stuff, I built a trailer hitch which conforms fairly well with the Porsche hitch that Porsche offered for the 944. Mine has 2 in. square reciever so a bike rack with good rigidity will fit right in and all my problems are solved. Nothing touches paint, bumper, glass.
Perfect! The reciever also allows a "T" shaped aluminum upright to be placed in it which supports the aft end of my 18.5 ft comp cruiser class canoe. Front end rests on bar/suction cups on sun roof and tied in front.
Perhaps too complex a solution for such a simple problem, but geeeeeezzzzz... its for a Porsche, if it wasn't overengineered it just wouldn't be right!
Good Luck

I got the PP one for X-mas one year and was NOT impressed, big chunk o iron.

The one I have now and really like is the Sarris Bones rack, you can get it for 2, 3, or 4 bike I believe, the 2 bike one still clears the wing. Plus, it looks great and is even available in colors! I highly reccommend you check it out.

Make sure you get the hatchback adapters, they are padded toggles that support the rack from the joint, not the metal frame!

The attachment to the car works by 2 bigh padded feet on the bumber, the hatch points, the under bumper points, and the side straps will just reach the side fender wells. Very solid construction and attachment.

i work at a shop and recommend gettin a 1-1/4" reciever and a trailer hitch rack. you can get hitches that are pretty much invisible when the rack isnt on. try a search for "hidden hitches" or something like that. i have a fairly mint Thule 1-1/4" trailer hitch rack for two bikes. retails for 150, ill sell it to ya for 75 plus shipping. email me. (i dont ride anymore )

Well I got a yak rak, and the roof mounting system is STUPID. I like the saris better. Though the top of the line yak fork mount rack(that part that holds the bike, not the roof mount and cross bars), the viper, is pretty nice, especially my polished one , but they dont clear the larger brake calipers

Thanks for all the replies.

I'm going to check out the Saris rack.

Thanks for the offer dermass, but I really don't want to put a hitch on the car.
