Default Question about bodywork/POR-15

I've noticed lately that the paint in the battery-tray area (eg behind the firewall) on my car is starting to show its age pretty clearly - see attached picture. I was wondering if it would be possible for me to fix this by painting over it with POR-15 or somehting similar, or if the only way to fix it would be to strip it out and have it re-sprayed. In other words, is there a brush-on solution to this problem? I almost think that it might not look half bad with black paint/coating in there, but I don't know very much about what options there are for body finish stuff. Thanks

I did my battery tray area by welding in replacement pieces where necessary, and then brushing on truck bed liner. If you make nice clean tape lines at the edges, I think it looks pretty good, and no spray necessary. So far, it's held up pretty well, but that doesn't mean much in my case (1 year, car kept in garage, but I do take it out in the rain).

if its not rusted through POR15 will work great. It comes in different colors as well so they may have white. Keep in mind that its not UV protected so technically you should spray paint over it anyway. Basically scrub off the loose paint and rust, clean it and brush some POR15 over the rust. Let it dry, lightly sand and spray over it w/ paint. Good as new. If its got some pin holes just put some tape under it you dont want that in your car on the carpet.

thanks for the tips and for confirming what I thought could be done. One other question, and I apologize if it sounds like a silly question - do I need any sort of special facilities to brush on POR-15 or can it be done in a driveway?

no its pretty simple though you need to thoroughly read the instructions. Only pour what you will use into a disposable cup and close the can back up as to not contaminate. Then w/ rubber gloves you can brush the stuff on pretty easily. On the can it says the only thing that will take the stuff off your hands is TIME! Catch it soon enough and some laquer thinner will do so dont spill it on your fender.

I've had great success with the POR15 treatment also. I used it in 2003 and it has kept my battery tray in perfect condition, no rust. They had a kit with gloves, brushes, special primer, & the POR15 paint. The 914 guys use it too so you know it works.
