Default Engine Stand Options

Any recommendations for a engine stand + how to attach engine to stand/cradle? Should I just buy generic (Harbour Frieght, Sears, etc) or is there a better option?

TIA Mike

For the 944, i just use a cheap generic stand. To allow clearance to mount with the flywheel, I just use washers between the cradle and the engine as needed.

Thanks Doc, do you have a picture of the back of the engine on the stand? Do you simply attach it to the stand with the clutch housing bolts?

heres a picture of the back of mine.

a few of the bolts were too long and bottomed out in the block so i used a few large nuts as spacers

Yup, here you go. You have to play with the amount of washers needed once you fit the flywheel. I would recommend setting the crank in, torquing your ladder bar and oil pump accordingly, then pull the engine off the stand while it is still somewhat light, set the RMS in, slap on the flywheel, and then set it back up on the stand and finish the engine. I've gotten away from this method as I have an overhead lift in the shop and a table to set the engine on. Once I put the pan and crossover pipe on, I lift the engine onto the table then finish it from there (head, cam tower, belts, flywheel, clutch, etc).

Dont get a 3 wheel stand, get a 4 wheel one. Like in the pic in Docs post. Other than that, anything works

I use a stand which can be bought from the "store for men" in the Nordic countries, Biltema.

Ikea is of course for the ladies...
