Got about 198k miles on my '86 951. This last couple of months, I did the rod-bearings and ball-joints, so I won't have to do them for at least another 100k. Clutch is 1/2 worn, so I've got another 2-years or so. I'm thinking the tranny will go next, so I'll check up on that when I install the Phantom Grip LSD this weekend...

I have about 115k miles and it still runs like a bat out of hell.
I had also heard that Porsche's were expensive, I couldn't ask for a more reliable, 20 year old inexpenxive sports car.
Just a side note - Don't gut your cat., it will sound like ****.

93K miles. New Belts, Water pump, steering rack, tie rods, hoses, ball joints, all new bushings, top and bottom reseal, Sports Cup Clutch. All 6K miles ago. All done by PO. Kept all original by previous owners. Water runs away from the paint due to the amount of wax that is kept on it. I think the PO for taking such good care of it. The interior, other than one crack on the dask looks unused. 100% compression on all 4 zylinders.
Good luck on your search. Be patient, sometimes it takes awhile to find the car that is just right for your needs. And sometimes it will just fall into your lap when you least expect it.

I have just over 75,000 miles on my 85.5. runs like a top, just had all of the belts, seals, gaskets, and rollers/pulleys replaced over the winter. No leaks, perfect compression. Only real amounts of money that I've had to spend have been on "fun-stuff"/upgrades for it.
Now, I talked to a guy last week that I bought some parts from that just sold his 85.5 and he had 345,000 miles on it, never had to rebuild the engine or tranny. Just routine maintenance (cv joints, fluid changes, clutch, etc). Simply amazing. There is also a white 951 (86?) that is parked up at the local independant Porsche shop that has 299,999 on the odometer. It looks very scruffy but runs well mechanically according to the shop, just in for some routine belt changes.

This is very inspiring considering a lot of the 951's I see for sale have around 100k miles on them. Someday when I am shopping for a 951 miles on the clock won't be that big of concern.
Well, until that day.... <img src="graemlins/crying.gif" border="0" alt="[crying]" />
