Post oil filter advice

well i thought this one would have been covered before, but i didn't see much in the archives...

what are the options out there as far as oil filters? the oem ones are mahle, right? but i beleive amsoil makes a filter that will fit the 944, as do fram and some of the other less reputable manufacturers.

what are you all using? is there a mobil 1 filter that will fit a 951?

I just checked paragon and all they seem to have is a mahle oc142 which it seems is only for the pre 85 NA cars.

any advice as to what to get and where to source it from? thanks.

Mahle. Mahle was the OEM from Porsche. They recently switched to something else--ie, the last two filters I got from Porsche were not Mahle filters. They both leaked. Bought a Mahle, no more leak. I'm sticking with Mahle.

Yes, for your 1987 951, the AMSOIL part # is SDF36.

Yes... from my AMSOIL website...

Hope that helps.

I use Mahle. Used to get the red ones ,in order to give the engine compartment some color, but they are really hard to find now...at least my experience.

I have used Bosch for some time without problem... in my home town, this was the only brand readily available aside from "Purolator."

hehe

hey ben,

just wanted to drop some input..

using mahle too. if you can get them off of a site in bulk, that would be your best bet.

does any one know of that oil filter cooler that is around USD175.00 and allows one to pull off the filter w/ no mess? Miles (pca-ggr instructor) from Devek has one on his 944 NA, it's an expensive but practical addition. he also has an external oil cooler and MSDS air intake (damn that thing is big). unfortunately i can't remember what it is, who makes it, or how it works. will post info when i get it.

hey BS, get the amsoils they are better than any other (confirmed by independant research).
i use them as well they are a little expensive $9-10 a piece but they are worth it also the filter casing is much stiffer that any others try and squeeze one i bet you cant(with your hands of course)

thanks for all the inputs guys. instigator, what led you to your conclusion of the amsoil superiority? did you get your hands on some detailed tests results of various filters?

my mechanic is an amsoil dealer or something i think... he has all these banners and cut up filter displays and stuff. he's been telling me i should go with them for awhile. do any of you know if the amsoil filters have the check valve that is integrated into the mahle ones?

deni:
the <a href="http://forums.rennlist.com/forums/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic&f=15&t=002684" target="_blank">cartride filter thread</a> referenced <a href="http://www.cmfilters.com/spin-on.cfm" target="_blank">CM Filters</a> as a manufacturer of something similar to what you were describing.

AMSOIL oil filters have anti-drainback valves (if the OEM specs of the vehicle call for it) and relief valves (i.e. as is found in most filters... in the event that the filter media becomes clogged, oil will still flow to the engine).

More info here:

Hope that helps.

P.S. Your mechanic is a smart man...

Jim
