You can't visually check it. From what I have read and experienced, while driving let off of the gas. If you get alot of backlash it could be the rubber center. Anybody jump in here if I am wrong.

This is what a bad rubber center looks like. This was from when Jon and I changed out his clutch. It was a lot of fun...

The rubber centered clutch has a "limp home" feature for when the rubber goes away. You will hear a loud clunk as you release the clutch and get going. That is a warning. After a while, I suspect that the clutch will completely fail, and you will go nowhere fast. So if you were hearing a clunk as you were starting out in first, and occasionally in other gears, I suspect that is it.
Not sure if there is a way, short of removing the clutch to see this. But the noise was pretty obvious to me.

You can check the wear of the clutch disc material by measuring the slave cylinder's piston travel and comparing to spec. The Haynes manual explains it pretty well. As far as I know, there isn't a way to inspect the rubber center without removing the clutch.

Hey 250 posts! I'm one fourth of the way to being a guru! Maybe I can get a pay raise!

aw man i hope my clutch lasts a bit longer
i hear a little light clunk when engaging it and disengaging it

how would i measure travel?

i seem to have to rev match for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd and clutch with the revs a bit before letting go or it gets jumpy.. ew. but i cant afford to replace it so .. since it works.. i live with it
