Post Special kind of coolant?

I have been told that the porsche engines are made of a special silisium and aluminium alloy. This requires a special kind of coolant, one that do not corrode the metal.

Does anyone have any information on what kind of coolant to use on a 968 engine?

Phosphate free is what I believe you need, better wait for Danno or Skip to tell you for sure though.

Does anyone know where you can buy it in Canada? I asked for phosphate-free antifreeze at a Canadian Tire store, and the clerk says, really snotty, "what's that?" Well, it's antifreeze but without phosphate, you moron (I left out the moron bit). He started reading the Prestone bottles, none of which were phosphate free, and I left.

Americans, don't ever complain about Pepboys and the others. If you ever dealt with Crappy Tire, you'd know what I mean.

Phosphate and silica free IIRC. Try a VW dealer, they have 2 types, 1 is correct and the other is the next best thing. Sorry, can't remember which is which.

You can usually find it in the U.S. pretty easily. Comes colored orange to distinguish it from the normal green stuff...

I use the posphate free Orange Prestone, but I have had lots of people tell me I'm being stupid. Maybe I am, guess I'll find out...

My mechanic swears by the coolant used by Mercedes. Don't know the name or brand, but it is clear in color.

I've been using the orange Prestone 5 year coolant(after a good flushing w/ cleanser)for over a year so far. It states on the bottle it's phosphate free.

I'm not sure about the later 968 cars but here goes with my experience with my '88. I had heard about some problems with the orange colored Prestone/Dexcool stuff. Comes down to: it probably should only be used in cars that came filled with it from the factory (maybe). I finally gave in and called PNA who promptly refered me to my local Porsche dealer, & parts guy there told me that they use a VW antifreeze called AUTOBAHN, part # ZVW 237 105. I called my (more) local VW/Audi dealer who had it in stock for only a few dollars more than the orange stuff.
So this is what I put in my 944S. (It's a sorta blue color). Just to take it to the Nth degree,I diluted it with distilled water and now I can sleep better at night!

I heard not all orange colored coolants are dexcool. And some orange coolants are just dexcool compatible. Is this true? Thanks.

The stuff from Mercedes is good. $11 from the dealership--I'm pretty sure it's orange, though. Maybe we're talking different stuff. My sis uses it in her 190E and I use it in my 944.

The orange DexCool has some corrosion problems. Do a google search on it.

I would (and do) go with the old green stuff or the German types. If you are in North America or using distilled water, you don't need the German type, as they have very hard tap water which causes problems with additive packages.

Use green and distilled water, change every couple-three years and you are set. Only my opinion, but it has worked to perfection for the last 12 years.

Not long ago I drained the dreaded green stuff out of my car. The green stuff on the shelves at your local parts store has phosphates, which your Porsche manual says is a no-no. There are postings that phosphates are only an issue for European hard water. I've other concerns about silica (?), which is also in the green stuff. I have been told by small local shops that they have green stuff which is phosphate free. I'm not sure that I trust that info, as it appears that US producers have a defacto color coding.

After many hours of net-searching I was even more confused, and probably should have just spent the extra few $ on the German stuff, also available at my local parts store. Determined to be cheap, I called a fairly well known 928 shop. Upon learning that they fill customer cars with Dexcool, I quit worrying about the postings warning of corrosion problems, and put the $5.78/gal Prestone® Extended Life 5/150 Antifreeze/Coolant
<a href="http://www.prestone.com/home/index.html" target="_blank">web page</a>
from Walmart.
