Alright: I get the point: you guys don't want me to rant and rave about street racing. OK.

Can we come up with a compromise here? I'll shut up about street racing, as long as you guys STOP giving descriptions on what kind of safety precautions you took, how you were careful to make sure nobody innocent was around, how it was a safe and clean event...yadda yadda yadda...

If you're gonna play on the street, at least admit that it is not a good idea from a safety standpoint. And don't forget: there are alot of impressionable young people who frequent this board, and they may get the idea that they too can participate in such a 'safe' event. (You may have enough control of your car to handle a street race, but the kid who just got his license may not know what to do in an emergency.)

So: I won't preach at you anymore, but please consider my request.
Peace.

Good compromise. I agree with you it is not safe.

But, then again if people only did "safe" things, the world probably wouldn't have p-cars.

Hey everyone,

After driving quite a few "japaneese" cars and german cars, I would agree that *most* don't have the character of a Porsche or a BMW. The few exceptions i want to make (partially because I own one of them, and it's very similar to a 924/944) consists of an RX-7 and a first generation MR2. I've owned two 2nd generation RX-7's, both completely different animals. My first, an 88 GTU (a turbo without the turbo) was more of a hardcore track type car. It was tame for city driving, but had more of the pure sportscar roots in it. It wasn't incredibly fast (15.9 @86 stock), but it was a blast to drive.

My current car, an 89 Turbo II, is a completely different animal. While the car feels quite a bit more solid than the previous car, it retains the pure sports car feel. The steering is in no way mushy, and there is no question about whether you are able to "feel" the road or not. My mildly modified (full exhaust, intake, fuel compensation) car has around 270 rwhp, so it's very comparable to a mildly modified 951. After having driven a few 951's (my next car, we'll get to that), the Porsche seems a bit more refined than the RX-7 does, but the characteristics of both are strikingly similar. With similar weight (both around 2700 lbs) and weight distribution, there isn't much of a difference in handling, yet the Porsche feels a bit more positive on the turn in. Top end is phenominal in both cars, with the upper hand going to the RX-7, while the 951 definitely has the advantage of torque down low.

I'm done for now Good to meet you all .

Regards,
Jameson

Some good comments - but what it really comes down to is this... are you a car guy or a numbers guy? If I had my choice between an 88 951S and a 98 Type R with $100K in mods that could pull off the 1/4mi in 9 seconds... I know which one Id pick... the Type R of course, silly!! I could sell it and buy more P-cars!!!!

I agree with Supermac 7 having owned both 1st/2nd-gen RX-7s and a Supra. This would be a more fitting comparison, than comparing to a ITR. No matter which way you look at it, the ITR is an economy car, and will always be an economy car no matter what upgrades you throw in there. A comparable Porsche to make the comparison would be a Porsche economy car, like the VW Bug!

On the other hand, premiere Japanese cars designed and built with performance in mind do not display any of the short-comings noted above as being a "Japanese" characteristic. The cozy ride, the cheap interior, the insulated steering is intentional and is designed to fall within the target-market and cost projections.

Take a look at a German economy car, like say... a Golf or Jetta and you'll see the same annoyances. It unfortunate due to market forces that the former top-end makers like BMW and Mercedes have resorted to manufacturing economy cars, yecch...!

depending on the CRX model, a GS-R'd CRX should have walked the ITR... yer talking about 170HP in a car between 1900 and 2100 lbs (curb weight).

plus the GS-R engine has a MUCH broader torque curve than the ITR engine (the ITR sacrificed some low end torque for top end power)

the GS-R engine is a near-flat 128ft-lbs from 3000 rpm up to about 7500
