wouldn't have to be a Porsche 'specialist' either.

This brings up a good point. There's very little about the 944 that's so freakin' special that you can't take it to just a good mechanic. Face it, the real reason you're using a mechanic is because you don't have the alignment tools, or computer spin-balancer, a/c recharge/recovery, etc.

One of the things I'd like to have a 944 (951 more specifically) specialist would be for something like the timing belt. Sure, I'm confident I can do it myself (and probably will), but that's a job where if I screw up the balance shafts or throw a belt after the fact, I'm f'd. Whereas if that happens with a shop doing it, I'd have a warranty to cover it.

No. When it goes to the shop, I take it to the guy who says 'meh, it's just a fancy Volkswagen.' So far it's worked out ok.

A tie rod is a tie rod. It is not like Porsches are somehow magical. If the guy wiggled the front wheel, he should have known. It is more likely he was told to do an alignment and he did it without considering that maybe something else was wrong that affected the difficulty of the job.

i took mine to the shop around the corner. he called me back later that day "sorry we can't do the alignment. come in after work and we'll discuss" it turned out the driver side tie rod had alot of play in it. he didn't charge me anything. i was very happy about that. happy enough to go back to them for other service.

what was this shop? not a porsche shop. it was just local neighborhood meineke.

the old '84na needed an alignment/pulling and i took it to a non p-car shop that had a good reputation.

they told me it needed the inner tie rod and couldn't/wouldn't do anything until i could get the part.

no excuse for an competent alignment tech to not have not picked up on it.

how much driving was done after the alignment until you assessed the problem?

it otta be a freebie.

Thanks guys. It's been around 500 miles but like I said he drives like an old lady, and 150 miles of it was freeway.

too many miles/time for a freebie, they'll say, "ya hit something".
