Passed CA smog!
I just passed the infamous California dyno smog test at a test-only facility for my 968-powered 944 and I just have to brag about it. My readings were:
* Before: Old Factory cat w/ 142k miles (new O2 sensor, tune-up, etc.)
Test: CO2 / O2 / HC / CO / NO
15mph: 14.3 / 0.4 / 138 / 0.57 / 1128
25mph: 14.4 / 0.3 / 38 / 0.47 / 1015
which failed both HC and NO.
* After: Brand new Catco catalytic converter (CAT4764)
Test: CO2 / O2 / HC / CO / NO
15mph: 14.3 / 0.1 / 27 / 0.01 / 18
25mph: 14.3 / 0.0 / 14 / 0.01 / 0 <- ZERO!
To install, I didn't have a welder, so...
* cut off the old cat from the down pipe with just a dremel.
* grabbed a couple beers (in cans).
* drank one.
* cut-up the empty beer can and wrapped tin around the butt of the downpipe and the butt of the new cat, to help seal the ends together.
* placed a Walker 33228 band clamp to secure the new cat to the down-pipe.
* drank the other beer.
I was afraid of an exhaust leak, but 0.1/0.0 reading of O2 said otherwise.
The best part, my new local "Test-only" smog guy didn't blink an eye at the cone filter, aftermarket cat, or 3.0L motor.
