Default help: car turns over but won't start

I found some blown fuses
figured I'd change them

I forgot to remove the battery cable before doing so

it sounds like the car has no gas, but it does (put in atleast 1 gallon) and it sounds like it's short on fuel; at first it would start and run for a few secs - revving it made no difference , it would just slowly stall out

so what did I do? fry the fuel pump? fuel pump relay? going to change fuel filter anyways

side: while towing, ripped up my front bumper, very sad, time for an upgrade!

but yeah, any help? the spark plugs, wires, all good; this happened as soon as I changed the fuses which leads me to believe that my dubmbass must have messed up something with the fueling

right now it won't even start anymore, but it does turn over like it wants to

so I am thinking its just not getting fuel, but who knows?

hope its not the t-belt

it last idled under 400rpm and would die

now it won't start at all

any test that can be done to see what is wrong? from doing a search it's pretty much what I expect: any # of things - DME, fuel pump/filter ...

oh well, time to start digging again

Pre-req question: When trying to start, does the tach bounce?

*edit*
just went outside to take a look
everything works like normal, it just won't start; it's like it really wants to, but for some reason can't?
its very similar to how it was when I ran out of gas before, it will make the starting noise and turn over, but not actually start

it's got plenty of fuel

I guess fuel filter change (1st)? fuel pump? and anything under the hood to check?

Same question....does the tach move when you turn it over?

Cheers, Josh

today car stats just fine, no problem?

and in other news, I need to check out brake master cylinder - something is leaking from around there and brake pedal has to be pushed all the way in

what the hell is going on with this car!

Sounds like the same thing I went thru today with a 951. Turns out it was the fuel pump.

Thanks again Dan for your help today.

Did you try replacing the DME/Fuel Pump relay? I was having a lot of startup problems in an otherwise sound car - replacing that $15 part fixed half of it. ( A new starter motor and some wiring ground checks took care of the rest.)

I'm not saying that'll solve your problem, but for fifteen bucks and 30 seconds of work it's a better option than running tests on all the parts that could've gone bad. You should probably have a spare relay anyway.

- also echoing to replace your fuel filter

One thing that was wrong with my car was that for some reason the hose right after the maf was loose and came off, which made the car not start sometimes! But other then that check if you have any vacum leeks and make sure all hoses are connected! You be suprised that you have some that are loose, I found 3 that were not connected in my car when i bough it!

this is the first time it has happened without the car being low on fuel though

and yeah I was thinking about a new DME, I'm going to order a couple so I can have one that it's in there now, and if the car does it again, I'll swap with one of the new ones and keep the other for spare

and I am also going to simply change the fuel filter - just because I don't know how old it is and IMHO I should replace it just because its not much more expensive then a new DME

now, how do I know if all I need is a brake booster, or a new master cylinder? it's leaking from the "black tank" with brake fluid reservoir attached to it; the brakes work fine except for pedal going down way into the floor?
I should say though, that when I drive the car, I almost never brake really hard, I'll do it in "steps", but while towing, my dad was in 944 steering, and I think he actually locked up the brakes twice (something I've never done even once!) - I don't know if this would help or not though

or do we just open the sucker up and look inside? we tried adding brake fluid and it keeps leaking out slowly

and since I'll be ordering *insert the part name here* I'll have to get brake fluid, anything you guys would recomend? does Autozone rent out a tool for bleeding brakes?

by the way , after the oil change the car would be a little rough on the idle, around 800

normally it would be around 1000-1100 - almost always;

now when it starts it's back to it's normal idle too

I am having the same problem with my 78 924. Starter spins and wont turn over. I changed the fuel pump. Nothing. I looked at the pump relay, it has a fuse on the top- still good. should I just order a relay from porsche parts house or would Atozone etc. have this relay? Is there anything else to check?

Two nights ago I pulled the Turbo into the garage, no biggie. Next morning car would crank but not even a hint of firing so I swapped the dme relay, same story. Pulled the coil wire and tested for spark, no spark on first try but in the last few seconds of the second attempt, spark came back. Reinsallled the coil wire and started the car.

I've done alot of work on my car, but this is a new one on me.
