Attn: Rennlisters in Connecticut. Your help needed!!!!
I am getting some really high estimates for repairs from my mechanic. He's really good but right now I have two cars with mechanical repairs and its getting a little tight. Here are my questions.
A. Where is the absolute cheapest place to get an AC compressor/Front and rear shocks
B. Are there any competant wrenches here on the Rennboard who can help me out here. I would greatly appreciate it and you will be compensated for your work. Like I said my mechanic is fantastic but I'm having a bit of a tough time right now.
Please only competent wrenches, I don't want to insult anybody but i'm looking for somebody who know what their doing.
Here are the estimates I took over the phone. Can somebody shed some light here? thanks. I guess this is what I deserve for not wrenching my own cars. LOL
447.34 ac labor total AC 893.00
brakes unknown
steering pump and hose 656.20
pump 375.92
timing belt 1614.56 +133 for water pump
front engine seal kit
Hall sender
rear main seal and pan gasket not needed now but recommended when clutch job is done.
shocks 1370.22 labor 475.00
sumitomo 87.36 front 141.12 rear tires 592.32 total disposal fee $20 freight $70 4 wheel alignment $295

Have you tried searching any of the vendors? Your mechanic probably has a mark up for parts to cover his profit margin.
You can save at least 60% by doing it yourself.
For part pricing, check the usual suspects.

You can get front and rear KYB shocks from tirerack for like 150 total I think, stocks will be around 200-250 i think, bilsteins around 400-500, Koni's more than that.
Honestly your shop sounds insane. 1000 for shocks? IDK about that..
I'd do your shocks all around for 200 plus whatever the parts cost if you wanted.. but you'd have to bring the car to me or something, i'm right passed putnam ct, just at the border.. I'm just a college kid though, not some certified mechanic (i'm also a computer engineer)... But have rebuilt my engine and such. Can't say id have the time to help you with in-depth engine rebuilding, clutch or seals and all that, as I just don't have that kind of free time.. But stuff like shocks, brakes, etc I could get done in a day and for a ton cheaper than what it sounds like they want. Power steering pump assuming there's nothing wrong with your mounts and such, I'd do for real cheap unless you are talking rack then it'd be more.
I could probably throw in the AC compressor but I don't have the capability of charging the system, testing leaks, and all that.
Like I said, I'm not a certified mechanic but I've done just about everything on my car, and a lot of other cars.. If you needed that kind of hand I could give you some time for compensation of course. Dunno how far you are from me. Otherwise good luck! Let me know if there sanything i can do to help you out..
I'd say try shopping around to different shops, and look at parts prices at pelican and paragon if you can.

^^^Great man, I'm going to PM you in a bit. The travel is not a problem but I can't see paying him for the rest of that stuff. I authorized him to do my front seal, belts, rollers, water pump and hall sensor. The rest I'll have you do. The AC compressor I can get from Ebay for $300 and then I can just take it anywhere to get it charged. The shocks I'll buy and have you put them in. I wish I knew hot to wrench but just don't have the time to learn. But I'll learn while I am up at your place. thanks and talk to you soon.

You can get a good used AC compressor for less around here. I actually threw away an early one because nobody wanted it.
Devon knows his stuff. I live 10 minutes from him and drive to Madison every day for work, but I have enough to do for my own car. I'm also not quite the wrench he is.

Not sure where you are in CT but if you're willing to leave the car in NJ for a week or two I am sure my wrench would do much better...they are honest, reasonable and PCA-member/P-car driving guys.
Their shop is about 15mins west of the lincoln tunnel....
PM if you want more info.

Wow more CT guys YAYAAAAAAAAA, Im in Guilford CT and work in oldsaybrook at Lorensen Toyota, Im a ase certified toyota master tech. Id help ya but looks like you already have a offer, Plus I havent worked on many 944 just my own 924S. Your shop sounds very expensive, SHocks arent that hard as long as you have a spring compressor to do the front, Brakes EASY unless the calipers are frozen, Power steering pump shouldnt be to bad. Hoses might be a little pain. Thing is it might to most of or more than one day to do it and not rush. My 924S is almost done, When it is we need to get a CT fun run going

I've been using Suncoast Porsche for parts (either Aaron or Steve are the internet sales people). On a lot of parts, their prices are better than Pelican and Paragon.
