I haven't had to replace the front seal yet so I haven't seen the O ring. I am being to think that the oil pump sleave can pass a small amount of oil between the crankshaft and the sleave. This O ring will keep that oil from getting into the belt area. Since the Crank bolt is under a lot of force, the seal could be tight with only the metal to metal contact. I bet the pump will work fine without it, but it may weep a little oil. Comments?

Beab951 -

Without the O-ring, in a perfect world, you've have metal to metal contact (Smooth metal at that) which might cause some slippage at the oil pump - especially when cold. Seepage perhaps, but the oil pump drive is a good TIGHT fit - and the oil seal there prevents that from happening.

It's there to insure you get good surface friction to drive the oil pump.

HTH!

Bugger! I'm guessing that part of the old O-ring must still be there, I only removed the flat washer and key so I could replace the seal, still no leaks and 5 Bar until a warm 3 Bar, if it leaks I'll know where to start, the washer was in perfect condition, I had to look really hard at it to see which side faced the pump and which faced the pulley, it is great to have a car that no longer leaks, will soon have the garage floor painted.

Just got in from FL. Did NOT take the 951. It's sitting in my driveway where the &^#@ing mech just towed it home. Yes Chris, it is Jerry. Yes, I'm looking for a new mech. I was taking the car to FL for my son to drive on grad night. I was VERY disappointed and angry that he did not get that pleasure. Thnx to all who replied - I guess I'll be crawling under The Beast myself to take care of the problem. I had the mech retorque the bolt to no avail the morning I left. I'll try swapping the washer and checking the ps pulley next. <img border="0" alt="[grrrrrrr]" title="" src="graemlins/cussing.gif" />
Thanx all!

Michelle, he should refund your money and cost to repair it correctly, if I'm not mistaken.

Sorry this happened when you needed it for such an important occasion!

Julie's right - or at least fix the car for free.

The only real concern I have, as Michelle is going to tackle this, is for her rod bearings. If they didn't knock - then ok. If they did - it's a bit longer of a repair now.

Ack.

I don't think I want him touching my car again. I'll do it myself, find another mech for times when I'm in the lurch, and chalk this up to experience.

I just saw the poor 951- sadly it sits. It looks fast standing still. Michelle- I hope the best. IMHO- If you would like I'll have My wrench (I gave you his card today) Call the bast@#d and see what he did. Bob LOVES these cars and hates to see them abused- by owners, he expects- but by another wrench- He'll go ballistic!!
Let me know- He's only a call away. IT's a quick 1 1/2 hour tow here- I have a friend with a trailer and he is free this week- we'll tow it down for you and let MY wrench look at it. you'll have it back in no time. (like a day.. I'll deliver it back to you!!) I cant believe your luck lately.. This truly sucks.

I may take you up on this. I just emailed Skip to see about the O-rings. I've got so much on my plate over the next...**** - 3 months!... that I don't know what I'm gonna do. I'll probably get it done just in time to park it for the winter!

Michelle,
I trust you had the timing belt and balance belts replaced at the same time the water pump was done?I believe there was an updated tensioner and/or pulley setup that put less stress on the belt. Your mechanic should have installed that too. Do you know if he did? If not, and you take this all apart again, make sure you add the updated tensioner & pulley since it will add to the longevity of the belts. Basically, it increases the radius of the arc the belt has to follow.
Regards,
Ken

I bought the parts, he just put'em on. I got the updated kit. It had previously been updated, so the PO had done SOMETHING to the car!

Most places that sell the WP will sell the updated version. Just ask. It requires cutting the back of the timing cover a little. It's just a bar that goes over two bolts on the WP. I have it on both my n/a and turbo.

Just as a side note:

I have NEVER had to remove the crank pulley to change belts. If you twist the belt sideways it will slip between the pulley and the housing with a little effort.
