Post Am I getting ripped off????? PLZ HELP

Hey guys about a month ago my head gasket let go and I had the head done at this Porsche shop and they also replaced the timing belt. The time to retension is nearing and when I called them they said its a $150 to retension. Shouldnt that be a part of the timing belt job or is it really an extra charge. Any info would help thanks.

What did they charge for the cam/timing belt job initially?

Agreed. I had my belt changed in the USA and shortly thereafter I moved to Italy. After 1500 miles I took it to the Naples Porsche dealership for the check/retention and they did it for free. It is not an indepth job nor should it cost $150, especially if they did the belt change initially!

Call around and see if there is a Porsche-knowledgable shop in your area that will do it reasonably. Give your local dealer a call and see how much they will do it for.

When I bought my car in August, it had a new timing belt and needed to be retensioned. I called a few places and the cheapest I found was $150, the most expensive $200. I agree it should be part of the initial job, but they have to take covers off and it is more complicated than you think. In conclusion, $150 is a fair price.

I had mine done on both 944's that I've owned and have been charge $60 per belt. I was also told up front.

I trust my mechanic with nearly anything, he's just that good of a guy. He's also our local PCA inpections/mechanic for autocross and other stuff. Great guy, can't say enough good things about him.

He's not cheap, but I'm a believer in the ol' saying "you get what you pay for", and I believe I still get more than my money's worth in quality and peace of mind... thanks Marty H.

My retensions have been free so far, I use a private mechanic, Danny Simonson (Foreign Performance).
Great guy, I use him for everything though, so he knows me pretty well and vice versa

Thanx guys the belt head job cost 2200 with a bunch of extra stuff like hoses, rollers, etc... Im thinking charging a $150 is a ripoff it should be free when I paid them to do it initially.

Hmmm, for that price you should definitely get the belt tension for free! Headgasket replacements are usually $900-1200 and belt/water-pump jobs are $300-500.

My retentions (done two since I owned the car) have always been free 1500 miles after the install. If you are being charged a labor rate - the job shouldnt take more than an hour - if youre being charged for two your getting ripped.
